The United Nations provides opportunities for students enrolled in a graduate programme to undertake an internship at its Headquarters in New York.

This Internship Programme is for the United Nations Headquarters in New York only.

The objective of the Internship Programme is threefold:

1). To provide a framework by which graduate and post-graduate students from diverse academic backgrounds may be assigned to United Nations Offices where their educational experience can be enhanced through practical work assignments.

The United Nations Headquarters Internship Programme is offered on a two-month basis three times a year:

1. Applicants must be enrolled in a degree programme in a graduate school (second university degree or higher) at the time of application and during the internship; or

2. Applicants pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages must have completed at least four years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree.

Any work produced by interns during their internship within the framework of the duties assigned to them should be used for academic purposes exclusively. All economic and moral rights (copyright) pertaining to such work will remain the exclusive property of the United Nations.

USA : Postdoctoral Research Fellow Positions

Postdoctoral Research Fellow Positions in Computational Biology, University of Tennessee Health Science Center, USA

Postdoctoral research fellow positions in Computational Biology are available in Dr. Yan Cui’s lab at University of Tennessee Health Science Center (Memphis, Tennessee, USA). Our research interests include predictive modeling of genetic networks, phenotypic effect of genetic variations, functional elements in non-coding DNA sequences and evolutionary theory (for details see our web page at http://compbio.utmem.edu).

The successful applicants will have the opportunity to participate exciting research projects such as: (1) Sequencing the genome of a mouse strain (DBA/2) and identify all the genetic differences between DBA/2 and the C57BL/6 strain (whose genome has been sequenced), (2) Designing custom microarrays to study the differential gene expression across the BXD recombinant inbred strains (which were derived from the crossing of DBA/2 and C57BL/6), (3) Developing computational models to elucidate the causal pathways through which genetic variations influence phenotypes and predict the effects of genetic/transcriptional variations/interventions on the phenotypes (e.g. individual differences in disease susceptibility and responses to medications), (4) Computational modeling of cerebellum development in time and space, (5) Inferring the genetic pathways underlying individual differences in immune responses to a number of pathogens. The multidisciplinary research environment will provide numerous opportunities to collaborate with experimental biologists.

The successful applicants will be able to take advantage of the high performance computing facilities, a 48-cpu Linux cluster of our lab and a new petaflop supercomputer hosted at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

The East-West Center is pleased to announce new fellowships for the Asia Pacific Leadership Program for
2009-10. Entering its eight year, the Asia Paci?c Leadership Program (APLP) is the center of excellence for leadership education in the Asia Paci?c region. The APLP is a graduate certi?cate program combining the development of regional expertise with the enhancement of individual leadership capacity. Based at the East-West Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, the program has created a network of dynamic leaders in 48 countries who are helping to build a peaceful, prosperous and just Asia Paci?c community. All participants receive an APLP Entrance Fellowship valued at approximately $15,000.

Participants
The Asia Pacific Leadership Program seeks outstanding individuals with proven leadership experience or high leadership potential from across the Asia Pacific region, North America and beyond. All participants have at least a Bachelors degree with the majority having graduate degrees as well. At least 20 countries are represented in each cohort. APLP Fellows come together from all walks of life, including
areas as diverse as government, business, NGOs, health sciences, media, monastic orders, and education.

APLP participants will gain broad regional perspectives, become knowledgeable about the critical challenges facing the Asia Pacific region, and be trained to exercise leadership and promote cooperation. The APLP empowers leaders with the knowledge, skills, experiences, and supportive community needed to successfully navigate personal and regional change in the 21st century.

The Department of Marine Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill invites applicants for graduate study in Ph.D. and M.S. programs. Our Marine Sciences program has substantial federal, state and private funding support for cutting-edge research on topics including marine ecology, biogeochemical processes, marine microbiology, coastal and estuarine physical oceanography, river-ocean interactions, coastal geology, fluid dynamics and acoustics. These interdisciplinary, collaborative projects are increasing our understanding of the marine environment and are assessing impacts of human- and climatically-induced change in the coastal zone. Graduates of our program hold positions in a variety of settings, including at universities and research institutions (within the US and abroad), and in federal and state agencies.

We are addressing a wide range of environmental processes and problems along the continuum spanning riverine, estuarine, coastal and open ocean environments around the globe including the Arctic, the Amazon, the US East Coast and Florida Keys, the Caribbean/Gulf of Mexico and Gulf of California, Chinese rivers and lakes, and the Pacific, including the Galapagos Islands (where UNC-Chapel Hill maintains a field laboratory). The two Sumitro Fellowships are available for post-doctoral scholars, Ph.D. candidates, senior academics, and otherwise professionally qualified candidates who wish to engage in field research in Indonesia on an economic or political-economic topic.

One grant is available to United States citizens and permanent residents in the United States with a specific project on a topic relating to the political economy of Indonesia. The other Sumitro Fellowship is also open to an Indonesian citizen with a project related to the Indonesian-United States relationship. Previous travel to, and experience in, Indonesia or the United States (for Indonesian Sumitro applicants) is desirable but not necessarily a requirement.

Post-doc Positions Available in BCI Research / Neural Engineering

Two post-doc positions (funded for 3+ years) are available immediately in the field of Brain-Computer Interface / Neural Engineering research.

The successful candidates will be part of the Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) Research and Development Program at the Wadsworth Center in Albany, New York. The incumbents’ appointment will formally be with the Department of Neurology at Albany Medical College with a status as Visiting Scientist at the Wadsworth Center. The research will primarily involve the use of signals recorded from the surface of the brain (electrocorticography (ECoG)) in humans to decode specific aspects of human behavior from ECoG signals, and to use these signals for communication. Specifically, the goal of this project is to use ECoG signals to decode kinematic parameters of directional intent or hand/eye movements (which are detected with eye trackers, data gloves, and joysticks), and to build a system that extracts and uses these signals in real time. This real-time implementation will be based on our BCI2000 system (http://www.bci2000.org), which has become the standard in the field of BCI research and has already been provided to more than 240 laboratories around the world.

The ideal applicant will have demonstrated expertise in signal processing, in particular time series/spectral analyses, classification, and machine learning, a solid understanding of neuroscience, in particular in attentional/intentional/motor systems, and programming expertise in Matlab or C++.

Abe Fellowship in Policy-relevant Topics

The Social Science Research Council (SSRC), the Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership (CGP), and the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) announce the annual Abe Fellowship competition. The Abe Fellowship is designed to encourage international multidisciplinary research on topics of pressing global concern. The Abe Fellowship Program seeks to foster the development of a new generation of researchers who are interested in policy-relevant topics of long-range importance and who are willing to become key members of a bilateral and global research network built around such topics.

The Abe Fellowship Research Agenda
Applicants are invited to submit proposals for research in the social sciences and related fields relevant to any one or combination of the following three themes:

1) Traditional and Non-Traditional Approaches to Security and Diplomacy
Topic areas include transnational terrorism, internal ethnic and religious strife, infectious diseases, food safety, climate change, and non-proliferation, as well as the role of cultural initiatives in peace building.

The program provides Abe Fellows with a minimum of 3 and maximum of 12 months of full-time support over a 24 month period. Part-time residence abroad in the United States or Japan is required.

• This competition is open to citizens of the United States and Japan as well as to nationals of other countries who can demonstrate strong and serious long-term affiliations with research communities in Japan or the United States.

We are advancing new technologies to better understand the growth, spread and evolution of viruses. Active NIH-supported projects are in three areas: (1) flow-enhanced spread and characterization of infections in microfluidic devices, (2) phenotype distributions from measurements and models of infections initiated by single virus particles, (3) dynamics of virus populations in anti-viral environments. Quantitative biology: methods to detect and/or quantify nucleic acids, proteins, viruses, virus-like particles, activation of innate immunity. A PhD student is sought in computational fluid dynamics/computational engineering at City College, the City University of New York(CUNY). The successful candidate is expected to work on numerical simulation of flow problems, such as ocean/coastal flows, environmental flows.

The candidate must be highly motivated, goal-oriented and have:

• Master degree (applied math, civil, oceanography, mechanical, etc.)
• Solid background in mathematics as well as engineering
• Good knowledge of Fortran, C/C++

Background in both math and engineering is especially welcome (e.g., BS in math, MS in eng, fluid related). Preference will be given to whom with previous experience in programming, flow modeling algorithm development, and MPI.
