At the University of St. Gallen, Department of Economics, one 35% - 70% -POSITION IN FINANCIAL

starting in March 2009. The position is part of the Prof. Enrico De Giorgi’s research group. It is assumed that candidates for these position are willing to start a Ph.D. in Financial Economics or Quantitative Finance at the University of St. Gallen. Ph. D. topics for a thesis can cover both, theoretical or empirical methods in Finance and Economics. Examples of recent research articles that could be starting points for a Ph. The successful candidate will be integrated in a young, strongly research oriented team, with strong foundation in quantitative methods in Finance and Economics. The group will be located at the Institute of Mathematics and Statistics of the University of St. Gallen. The new Ph. D. candidate is expected to interact strongly with the professors of the Institute of Mathematics and Statistics in the development of their thesis, as well as with professors and post?docs of the Swiss Institute of Banking and Finance. The candidate is also expected to collaborate in the development of the teaching activities of the group in the areas of mathematics and quantitative methods for Finance and Economics.

PhD Positions in Real-time Optimization of Dynamical Systems, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland

The Automatic Control Laboratory (Laboratoire d’Automatique, LA, http://lawww.epfl.ch) of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) is looking for a qualified candidate to undertake doctoral work in the area of Real-time Optimization of Dynamical Systems.

The project will focus on the use of measurements for real-time optimization. In particular, it is proposed to formalize some aspects of NCO tracking, a methodology developed at LA, which turns a dynamic optimization problem into a feedback control problem.

Applicants should have a strong background in dynamical systems, control, and optimization and hold a master’s degree in Chemical, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering. EPFL offers highly competitive salaries. The position is available right away, but a start within 3-6 months is possible.

The chair of “Macroeconomics: Innovation and Policy” has a job opening for a PhDposition.

We are interested in candidates who have completed the equivalent of a Masters degree and whose interests coincide with ongoing research at our chair. We employ and develop macroeconomic, strategic and cooperative thinking to analyze short- and long-term economic and political problems. We suggest improvements, develop policy guidelines and design new institutions aimed at fostering the common welfare. Our?research can be subdivided into three areas:

• Area M: Macroeconomic Thinking and Economic Policy,
• Area I: Innovation, the Engines of Growth and Long-term Well-being,
• Area P: Design of New Organizations/Institutions and their Foundations.

Our chair is part of the CER-ETH (Center of Economic Research at ETH Zurich), which belongs to the Department of Management, Technology and Economics. The PhDposition we currently offer is planned for research topics of area P. As a PhD student in a leading research institute integrated in the ETH Zurich, you will conduct academic and policy-relevant economic research in an inspiring environment.

The PhD student will work under the supervision of Professor Hans Gersbach and other members of the faculty. Good writing skills and computing skills are essential. The main focus of the position will be on conceptual and theoretical research. The appointment includes opportunities for teaching related to the candidate’s field of interest. Fluent knowledge of English is mandatory. Master degrees in mathematics, physics or engineering sciences are welcome.

The new CALVIN research group at the Computer Vision Laboratory of ETH Zurich is looking for several PhD students.

There are three main topics:

• large-scale learning of thousands of object/scene/attribute categories and their mutual contextual relations from the Internet
• human pose estimation and action recognition in uncontrolled video, such as TV shows
• modeling the parallel between the structure of visual scenes and the structure of natural sentences to aid visual learning and automatic image annotation

Your profile:

• Masters degree (preferably in Computer Science; Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, and Physics are also accepted)
• Solid programming skills; the projects involve programming in Matlab and C++
• Solid mathematics knowledge (especially linear algebra and statistics)
• Creative and highly motivated
• Fluent in English, both written and spoken
• Prior knowledge in the areas of computer vision, machine learning or data mining is a plus (ideally a master thesis in a related field)
