Admission 2009 - 2010
The School offers two doctoral programs: Economics (DEC) and Business Management (DEA). They cooperate and share most activities.

There are 5 three-year fellowships available for DEC and another 5 for DEA.

Classes start on September 1st, 2009. Most first-year classes are common across the two programs.

The general application procedure is similar for the two programs, with minor differences. Please make sure to carefully read the relevant information for the program you wish to apply for: DEA or DEC.

Separate applications are required for either program. Simultaneous applications to more than one program are possible.

An application must abide by the statute of their respective “Bando” (Official Advert) as published on the Gazzetta Ufficiale della Repubblica Italiana. Obligatory attachments to the application form:

• Statement of purpose written in English language -The candidate should describe his/her professional goals and research interests, as well as providing any information useful to evaluate him/her (but not implied by the other attached documents) (no more than 15.000 characters)
• Curriculum Vitae
• Degree Certificate –or equivalent qualification: Grade/marks of degree, title of the dissertation and a dissertation abstract of no more than 30.000 characters.

At least two letters of recommendation from university professors or scientific researchers (one letter has to attest the candidate’s adequate knowledge of English language) Please use the online form.

Foreign academic qualifications: if you have foreign academic qualifications you are required to attach the following:
- the academic qualification certificate including the list of exams taken, with sworn translation into Italian and Apostille;
- a “statement of value”, issued by the Italian embassy/consulate in the country where the institution issuing the academic qualification is based certifying that the qualification is valid for registration at a university course – in that country - equivalent to the Research doctorate in Italy.

If you are unable to provide the “statement of value” document within the application deadline, you must fill in attachment “C”.
In this case candidates will be admitted to the competitive examinations “under reservation”. Therefore, if they qualify for admission as winners, they will have to submit the required original documents at the time of enrolment

All candidates must be in possession of the qualifications requested at the time of applying for the doctoral program, 23rd of June 2009, otherwise they will be excluded from the competitive examination.

Positions available for enrollment in the PhD in Economics, academic year 2009-2010

For the academic year 2009-20010, eight positions are available. All positions are tuition free. Four positions come with a scholarship.

The deadline for submitting an application is May, 29, 2009. Courses start October 2009.

Requirements:
Students applying for the Doctoral Program must have completed a Laurea Magistrale or a Laurea (vecchio ordinamento) or any other equivalent foreign (bachelor) degree. If you hold a bachelor degree granted by a foreign institution, you have to obtain a legal transcript translated in Italian along with a certificate of validation (dichiarazione di valore) issued by an Italian diplomatic office in the same country where the degree was granted.

Deadline:
May 29 2009. Applications from students who will complete their degree by July 31 2009 will also be considered. Along with the application form, students must provide:
1. one reference letter,
2. a transcript showing exams passed, date of completion and marks awarded.

Admission procedure.
Based on the above documents, the personal resume and any other academic degrees and certificates that the candidates may want to submit along with their application (such as the GRE, GMAT or certificates of English proficiency), a subset of candidates will be selected for a colloquium to be held at LUISS G. Carli (viale Romania 32), July 3, at 9am. In the colloquium, the Selection Committe will test the candidate potential and ability to carry out academic research in economics.

Postdoctoral Position at Department of Experimental Pathology

Italy: Postdoctoral Position at Department of Experimental Pathology, the University of Bologna

One post-doctoral position is available at the Department of Experimental Pathology of the University of Bologna. We look for a highly motivated individual with a PhD in biomedical sciences or related fields.

The focus of the project, which is funded for three years by the Association for International Cancer Research (AICR), will be to define the role of DKC1 gene as a tumor suppressor in human cancer. The research plan will include experimental approaches to study how DKC1 gene functional impairment can influence ribosome biogenesis and the translation of genes involved in neoplastic transformation and progression in vitro, as well as the study of DKC1 gene mutations, epigenetic modifications and expression in primary tumors relevant for human pathology. The works involve cellular and molecular biology, protein biochemistry and molecular pathology of human primary tumors.

The applicant is expected to be well trained in molecular biology techniques and have a basic understanding of cancer research. Two PhD positions are funded in our laboratory (within the framework of the European Initial Training Network CARMUSYS - Carbohydrate Multivalent Systems as Tools to Study Pathogen Interactions with DC-SIGN - PEOPLE Programme of the FP7 PITN-GA-2008-213592)

This multidisciplinary project intends to develop synthetic tools based on carbohydrates and carbohydrate mimics (monovalent and multivalent presentations) to unravel, understand and interfere in the recognition process of the dendritic cell receptor DC-SIGN during infection and immunological processes.

In close contact with top European research institutes our laboratory will be responsible for the design and synthesis of sugar mimics capable of interacting with DC-SIGN. It will also collaborate with other network nodes in the structural analysis and in vitro binding studies to determine the mimics’ affinity.

The Doctoral Program in Economics and Finance is designed to train doctoral candidates in a broad program of advanced study for careers in teaching and research in universities, in public and private research organizations, in financial and consulting institutions and private companies. The department recruits promising students from Italy and abroad and courses are taught in English. Students are accepted directly for Ph.D. degree. As prerequisite, students must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Italy or the equivalent level of education from an institution outside Italy.

The internationalization program, financed by the Italian Ministry of University and Research and the University of Verona, has lead in the recent years to exchange agreements with the universities of Essex,

The first Call is for two scholarships. One is a general university scholarship. Another scholarship is linked the realization of an internationally co-tutored project in collaboration with the University of Cergy-Pontoise or Paris X and involves a compulsory period of study and research (up to 18 months) at one of these institutions. The amount granted for these scholarships is € 13,638 per year and this is exempt from personal income tax. They will be granted for the entire duration of the PhD course and will be increased by 50% during authorized study periods abroad.

The second Call is for a scholarship (co-funded by Regione Veneto – FSE) reserved for the realization of the a research project on “The Economic Analysis of Juvenile Crime and Policy Implications”. In this case the scholarship amounts to € 19,000 gross per year.

Computer Science and Engineering
Theories developed within computer science have been, and still are, remarkably relevant not only for developing devices and tools which are commonly used in today society, but also for facing new theoretical problems of wide perspective. In particular, the study of models, algorithms and verification methods of distributed systems with shared resources, with attention to the problems of security, concurrency, real time, “open endness”, distributed decisions, etc. has fostered the development of the informatics of the new wide area networks. Students acquire extensive knowledge of the fundamentals and applications of architectures and languages for global and grid
computing, web systems and services, in particular for business applications, embedded systems, web data mining, wired and wireless networks, and mobile systems. In addition to offering broad scope for
basic research, these domains define a professional area where all the needs of computer applications on wide are networks can find their fulfillment.

Economics, Markets, Institutions
With its interdisciplinary (theoretical, quantitative and institutional) approach, the program aims at dealing with issues in political economy, applied public economics, and the functioning of industries and markets, the impact of macroeconomic impact on the functioning of markets, as well as on productivity and growth. A distinctive character of the PhD program is the strong integration of theoretical, technical and practical expertise, aimed to educate highly qualified professionals, who analyze, plan, and manage concrete interventions of political economy.

Theoretical methodologies and models will therefore tested through the methodical/systematic investigation of actual cases. At the end of the program, students will be able to catch commonalities as well as distinctive characters of the several markets, in reference to economic laws, market regulations, contractual, managing and organizational solutions.

Political Systems and Institutional Change
The PhD Program aims to make students familiar with analytical tools and methodologies of investigation elaborated within different contemporary traditions in social sciences, thereby providing the theoretical and practical knowledge necessary to both evaluate comparatively the performance of institutional systems, and elaborate proposals for structural reforms. The courses will especially focus on the historical, political, institutional and economic dynamics that have been characterising the development of European and ex Soviet countries after the Second Word War. Annual Scholarship: Annual scholarship amount is +/- 13.638,00 Euros gross, corresponding to +/- 2.270,00 Euros gross paid every two months. Scholarships are awarded for three years and are confirmed yearly.

Scholarships benefit from tax breaks.

The Research Centre of the Edmund Mach Foundation (San Michele all’Adige, Trento, Italy) is one of the most important for horticultural research in Europe. Research includes improvement of crop productions of grapevine and apple. During 2007 the Research Centre obtained the genome sequence of grape and a similar effort in apple is expected to be completed during 2008. Following these achievements, we started an interdisciplinary translational genomics programme aimed at the fully exploitation of the knowledge generated by the two genome sequencing projects.

We are looking for young and motivated researchers that will join an already established team of scientists working with state-of-the-art genomic facilities, in an international English-spoken research environment.

Competitions for admission are open in the following PhD Programs at IMT: Computer Science and Engineering Theories developed within computer science have been, and still are, remarkably relevant not only for developing devices and tools which are commonly used in today society, but also for facing new theoretical problems of wide perspective.

In particular, the study of models, algorithms and verification methods of distributed systems with shared resources, with attention to the problems of security, concurrency, real time, “open endness”,
distributed decisions, etc. has fostered the development of the informatics of the new wide area networks. Students acquire extensive knowledge of the fundamentals and applications of architectures and languages for global and grid computing, web systems and services, in particular for business applications, embedded systems, web data mining, wired and wireless networks, and mobile systems. In addition to offering broad scope for basic research, these domains define a professional area where all the needs of computer applications on wide are networks can find their fulfilment.

Economics, Markets, Institutions With its interdisciplinary (theoretical, quantitative and institutional) approach, the program aims at dealing with issues in political economy, applied public economics, and the functioning of industries and markets, the impact of macroeconomic impact on the functioning of markets, as well as on productivity and growth.

A distinctive character of the PhD program is the strong integration of theoretical, technical and practical expertise, aimed to educate highly qualified professionals, who analyze, plan, and manage concrete interventions of political economy.

Theoretical methodologies and models will therefore tested through the methodical/systematic investigation of actual cases. At the end of the program, students will be able to catch commonalities as well as distinctive characters of the several markets, in reference to economic laws, market regulations, contractual, managing and organizational solutions.

Political Systems and Institutional Change The PhD Program aims to make students familiar with analytical tools and methodologies of investigation elaborated within different contemporary traditions in
social sciences, thereby providing the theoretical and practical knowledge necessary to both evaluate comparatively the performance of institutional systems, and elaborate proposals for structural
reforms. The courses will especially focus on the historical, political, institutional and economic dynamics that have been characterising the development of European and ex Soviet countries
after the Second Word War.
