The chair of Logistics and Supply Chain Management at the University of Vienna offers a PhD-candidate position in its expanding international research team. The position includes participation in the faculty’s PhD program in Logistics and Operations Management and the opportunity to conduct a research project under the supervision of experienced senior researchers. A four year scholarship, the possibility to spend some time at a foreign research institution, and to present research results at leading international conferences are provided. The position further offers the opportunity to gain teaching experience (all Logistics and Supply Chain courses are taught in English) and to disseminate the research results within projects with industry. Our research areas include supply chain inventory management (especially service parts and retail applications), supply chain coordination (using game theoretic approaches), and strategic network design.

The Medical University of Graz offers a PhD-Program in Molecular Medicine taught in English. The program provides cutting-edge education in basic principles of human diseases and therapeutics. The thesis projects will focus on various aspects of metabolic, cardiac and vascular diseases, inflammation, cancer and stem cells. They will also integrate basic, applied and clinical sciences, as well as a wide spectrum of experimental techniques.

The program offers multidisciplinary training in Molecular Medicine in a productive and international environment. Successful applicants will carry out individual research projects and participate in lectures, courses, journal clubs, thesis seminars, congresses etc.

Accepted PhD-students will be employed for 3 years with a contract that includes social benefits. Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in Medicine, Chemistry or Life Sciences. Good written and spoken English skills are required.

The Institute of Computer Science at the University of Innsbruck, Austria, invites applications for Phd students and Postdocs in the Distributed and Parallel Systems Group (DPS).

Your areas of interest should comprise:

• Application development and runtime environments for multi-core parallel architectures
• Program analysis and optimizations for parallel systems
• Programming languages and methods for multiprocessor architectures
• Performance analysis and debugging for parallel programs

Prerequisites:
Applicants must hold a master or equivalent degree in computer science.

Profile of our group:
DPS participates among others in the following EU projects: EU CoreGRID, EU EC-GIN, EU edutain@grid, EU Adaptive Services Grid, EU K-WF Grid, EU EGEE 1–3, SFB Aurora and Austrian Grid.

English; Note that the working and study language is English. The entire course and research programme is held in English only.

Letter of recommendation:
In addition, we request letters of recommendation from two scientists who are familiar with your academic work and who can judge your potential as a PhD student. Please forward the enclosed letters to the referees and ask them to send their letters of recommendation directly to the dean of the PhD Programme. We can only accept recommendation letters printed on the referee´s official paper and signed by the referee. You can either send the letters directly to the dean´s address above or email a scanned copy to the phd-office[ at ]mfpl.ac.at. The student himself / herself is responsible for obtaining the letters and should actively inquire with the respective referees whether the letters have been sent.
Please note that we will be unable to process your application without letters of recommendation. These letters are therefore an essential part of your application, and it is your responsibility to ensure that the referees write to us before November 30, 2008.

Selection procedure and admission:
Complete applications will be reviewed by a selection committee consisting of group leaders of the Vienna Biocenter. The short-listed candidates will receive invitations to visit the Vienna Biocenter for a five-day period of interviews and information exchange. These interviews will take place in January 2009. Travel expenses will be reimbursed, and free accommodation will be provided. Offers of admission will be made to the successful candidates at the end of the interview period.
