France: 100 PhD Positions Available in 2008 at INRIA

INRIA proposes young scientists a PhD in one of its research teams. Priority will be given to candidates with mobility background and to topics pertaining to the Institute’s priority themes.

You have a degree in computer science, automatic control or scientific computing equivalent to the French research master, you are planning to become a researcher in an academic environment, or, after training through research, to join a company or create one ?

Join INRIA for a PhD.
INRIA is at the leading edge of research and its scientific themes are innovative. You can meet there scientists of international stature or work with them. Novel ideas are considered with interest. INRIA maintains special relations with industry and fosters the emergence of startups founded by its research scientists (80 such companies founded in 20 years). At least 80 different nationalities are present at INRIA and activities are regularly organized in order to ease the integration of newcomers. The ambiance is relaxed and everyone can contribute to the social life of the community.

Survey into the professional integration of doctoral students – class of 2005
This inquiry, focussing on the 277 INRIA doctoral students who completed their thesis in 2005, reveals a particularly positive outlook. On average, 18 months after completion of their thesis, 97% of the doctoral graduates now hold posts that are consistent with their career path: 35% are researchers or research lecturers, 28% are engineers and 23% hold post-doc placements. Discover the full-length version of the survey.

Australia: AutoCRC Research Scholarship Safe and Reliable Integration and Deployment Architectures for Automotive Software Systems

AutoCRC Research Scholarship
Safe and Reliable Integration and Deployment Architectures for Automotive Software Systems

Research topic:
In modern automotive systems, the use of sensor networks, ECUs (Electronic Control Units) and software components presents opportunities for building innovative, cost-effective and flexible design solutions. However, the introduction of such software-controlled systems in the safety-critical areas of a car design must be carefully considered. The integration of software components and its implications, i.e. interaction, interoperation and sharing of resources, raise serious safety concerns, which include the possibility of common cause failure and unpredicted dependent failure of critical functions caused by malfunction of noncritical functions.

Further difficulties are caused by the increasing scale and complexity of automotive systems, which may contain up to one hundred sensors and
ECUs as well as hundreds of software components. Within this general research area, the proposed postgraduate research project aims to
identify and develop safe and reliable software integration and deployment architectures, where these architectures map software components/functionalities to available ECUs and govern/coordinate their interaction and interoperation.

Supervisors of the project are Prof Jun Han, Dr Lars Grunske, and Dr Antony Tang.

We are interested in a PhD student who has a very string academic record with background in one or more of the following areas:

  • component-based software engineering (in the areas of embedded systems, robotics, etc. )
  • software architectures and architecture evaluation
  • multi-objective optimisation in software engineering
  • formal methods in system design
  • software and systems engineering for safety and mission-critical systems
  • Communication skills and the ability to work in a team environment are also required.

The scholarship carries a value of AUS$28,000 p.a., with fee exemption for both Australian and international students. Additional project
support is also available for the student to carry out the research.

If you are interested in the research project, please provide the following information via email to lgrunske@swin.edu.au:

  • detailed curriculum vitae
  • an (electronic) copy of undergraduate and postgraduate transcripts
  • evidence of English proficiency (native English speaker, previous studies in English in certain cases, or IELTS of 6.5 with no band below 6).

Foundation Scholarships for Postgraduate Studies (ASEAN)

The ASEAN Foundation (AF) and the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) have reached an agreement to develop quality human resources in the member countries of ASEAN through the offering of the AF-AIT scholarships.

The ASEAN Foundation, an initiative of the leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN) was established on December 15, 1997 to contribute to the prosperity and a sustainable future for the peoples of all ASEAN countries that now comprise Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and VietNam. He was charged with promoting a greater awareness of the ASEAN and greater interaction between people and their increased participation in the activities of ASEAN as well as to undertake development cooperation activities that promote the ‘Mutual, address equitable economic development and reduce poverty.

The scholarship programme is part of the ASEAN Foundation Scholarships for postgraduate studies and funded by the Japan-ASEAN Solidarity Fund. The Asian Institute of Technology, on the other hand, is an institute post-1959, is a pioneer of the `Asia institution created to help meet the Irkutsk Region, growing needs for advanced training in engineering, science, technology and management, research and capacity building. AIT’s mission is to develop highly skilled and committed professionals who will play a leading role in the sustainable development of the region and its integration into the global economy.

AIT is based in Thailand and has affiliated centres in other parts of the world. Ten (10) graduate scholarships are available for ASEAN nationals who wish to pursue a master’s degree in AIT. The scholarship covers tuition and other academic expenses, and living allowances for a program of 2 years.

Four (4) grants will be awarded slots under the project “Capacity Building for Women, Poverty and the analysis of mobility development of road transport in the Greater Mekong.”
