Master grants for candidates from developing countries !NEW CALL!


This Ghent University programme provides master grants to candidates from developing countries who wish to obtain a master’s degree at Ghent University. The grants are available for all master programmes at Ghent University. They are awarded for the duration of the studies with a maximum of 2 years. In case of a two-year-programme the scholarship will only be paid for the full term if the student successfully completes the first year of the programme.



The scholarship consists of an allowance of 964 euro per month plus the yearly tuition fee.

This is the right way to start your procedure:


  • Decide what programme you would like to follow (consult the brochure ‘International Masters);
  • take care of your admission, this can take 3 months (consult the admission pdf!);

  • when you have received your admission letter, send it together with your completed Application Form to Liesbeth Vandepitte (1 hard copy, 1 electronic copy).

Belgium : Ph.D. positions within the Electromagnetics Group

Fully paid 4 years Ph.D. positions within the Electromagnetics Group, University of Ghent, Belgium

At present several fully paid 4 years Ph.D. positions are available within the Electromagnetics Group of the Dept. of Information Technology. Apart from a Master’s degree in Electrical or Physical Engineering and good knowledge of English, basic (graduate) knowledge in Electromagnetics and high-frequency electronics is sufficient. The Ph.D. candidate will be provided with all guidance and hardware and software tools necessary to perform state-of-the art research in one of the following fields:


  • High-frequency behavior of Integrated Circuits (ICs) with a special focus on ICs for the automotive industry. This research will be conducted in cooperation with Flemish industry partners, such as Melexis and ON Semiconductor, and also within a consortium of well-known European electronics manufacturers, such as Philips, NXP, Bosch, Infineon, …

  • Flexible and implantable antennas (in cooperation with Recticel and Flanders’ Drive)
  • Design and modeling of advanced submicron interconnect technologies of ICs (in cooperation with Agilent Technologies)
  • Advanced time-domain (FDTD) and finite element (FE) techniques for the simulation of antennas for usage within the ADS-framework of Agilent Technologies
  • Detection of concealed objects with millimeter waves (within a Strategic Basic Research project of the IWT) and early detection of breast tumors
  • Fast Maxwell solvers for very large and complex structures in cooperation with foreign research groups in the USA, Finland, Italy, Turkey, and Israel.


As a researcher within the Electromagnetics Group, you will be part of a team that has reached the top of the international scientific community for more than 20 years and this will allow you to fully develop your creative abilities. During these four years, you will regularly take part in international congresses and upon your request an internship in a foreign research group can be arranged. The Ph.D. research itself can be focused on more fundamental investigations as well as on innovative applied research in close collaboration with industry.


Through intensive coaching by senior researchers and professors and through cooperation with the Electromagnetics Group’s academic and industrial partners, the candidate will be trained as a highly skilled scientist and design engineer. Upon completion of the four years program, the Ph.D. graduate will be ready for a successful academic career or to hold an important position in a high-tech company.

The mission of the Leuven International Doctoral School Biomedical Sciences is to train young biomedical researchers to explore the fundamentals of living systems at all levels - from gene to cell to body and mind - and to leverage that knowledge to improve human health.



For 2009 we can offer up to 13 fully-funded PhD positions in the following doctoral school programs:


  • Cancer (2 fellowships)
  • Cell Signaling and Therapeutics (3 fellowships)
  • Drug Design and Development (2 fellowships)
  • Emerging Concepts in Cardiovascular Medicine (4 fellowships)

PhD Scholarships in Characterisation of the Fabric Deformation, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium

RESEARCH ASSISTANT (FOR PHD STUDIES)
Position opens: January 2009
Project duration: 2009 - 2012 (4 years)
Project title: Simulation Based Solutions for Industrial Manufacture of Large Infusion Composite Parts (INFUCOMP) – Framework program 7 of the European Commission


K.U. Leuven is responsible for the work package of the project: “Characterisation of the fabric deformation”


Objectives of the work


  1. The modelling work follows two parallel (but interrelated) routes;
    a. macro-model development for models to be implemented in existing state-of-the-art draping software PAM-FORM;
    b. and mathematical meso-modelling to extend the WiseTex software, with the aim to replace/reduce testing and provide (future) direct input to FE analysis.
  2. Compare the macro-models; one (or both) will be selected and used for drape modelling and provide input for infusion/mechanical performance data.
  3. New tests on the selected project fabrics will be performed to gather essential data on deformation, shear and through-thickness compression behaviour. Data will be used for fabric modelling and, furthermore, permeability testing/modelling.
  4. Experimental work will contribute to ‘standardisation’ of fabric testing and, where necessary, new procedures will be proposed. It is expected there will be a useful contribution to future standards.

Requirements
1. Master degree in one of the following fields (or similar)
- Composites materials
- Mechanics of solids
- Materials Engineering
- Mechanical engineering
- Textiles


Strong modelling background is an absolute requirement, more then experience with the certain class of materials (composites and textiles).


The educational background should include


  • Advanced course(s) on mechanics of solids
  • Numerical methods and scientific programming


2. Research experience


  • Master thesis work involving modeling of material behaviour and/or mechanical testing of composite or textile materials
  • Candidate having publications and/or conference papers will have an advantage


3. Language: English


Job contents


  • Development of models of deformation of textiles
  • Implementation of the models in software, using commercial FE package(s) and own programs (C++ is preferred).
  • Validation of the models through the extensive experimental program

Pre-doctoral researcher / Ph.D. student for a research project on
The influence of congestion and congestion policy on the efficiency of business logistics processes.

This research project aims at examining the impact of congestion and congestion policy on the logistics efficiency of companies. This issue is studied both from an operations research and an economic perspective. To investigate the effects of congestion and congestion policy at the level of an individual decision maker, several OR models will be developed to estimate the impact on (i) an individual link of the supply chain, (ii) on the size and positioning of safety stocks in an existing supply chain, and (iii) on redesigning a supply chain. For the economic analysis, partial equilibrium models will be designed to analyze the effects of congestion and congestion policy on fundamental logistics key performance indicators (e.g. average stock levels, service levels etc).

Profile
Candidates should have:

  • masters degree in mathematics, commercial engineering, applied economics, civil/industrial engineering, bioengineering or equal;
  • a strong interest in operations research and/or economic modelling and the ambition to write a Ph.D. dissertation;
  • a strong academic record;
  • a good knowledge of English.

We offer:
A scholarship in a stimulating research environment, starting as soon as possible until September 30th 2009, to be extended by two additional years after a positive evaluation.

Belgium: Open PhD Positions in Scheduling Algorithms, Department Maths & Computer Science, University of Antwerp

The department of Maths and Computer Science at the University of Antwerp, Belgium has an open position for a PhD student (full-time) in the PATS research group of Prof C. Blondia and B. Van Houdt.

In principle, it concerns a four year position (with an initial one year contract).

The topic of the open position is located within the area of scheduling algorithms and more specifically mainly concerns designing fast scheduling solutions for loading container vessels in the port of Antwerp.

The project is in cooperation with PSA-HNN, the second largest port operating group worldwide, and COSMOS.

Belgium: PhD studentship in the Empirical Study of Social Embodied Music Interaction, Ghent University

Ghent University: PhD studentship in the “Empirical study of social embodied music interaction”.

We are currently recruiting a PhD student to join our research team at IPEM, department of Musicology, Ghent University. The successful applicant will join our team in studying social embodied music interaction.

The ideal candidate should have obtained a MA degree in musicology, psychology, sociology or related disciplines, with skills in experimental design and computational methods. Applicants with interests in music, motor control, body movement and social interaction patterns are encouraged to apply.
