PhD position in ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY RELATED TO ROCK LOBSTER AQUACULTURE


The Australian Centre for Research on Separation Science (ACROSS) is a collaborative research centre involving some 50 researchers at the University of Tasmania in Hobart and RMIT University in Melbourne. ACROSS undertakes research over a broad range of topics related to separation science. A description of ACROSS and a copy of the 2007 Annual Report can be accessed at Http://www.across.utas.edu.au

There currently exists a position to work with this exciting and dynamic research centre on a project with direct relevance to hatchery production of rock lobster seedstock for aquaculture and enhancement with emphasis on ozonation of culture water to reduce disease. ACROSS holds an ARC Linkage grant in collaboration with the Tasmanian Aquaculture and Fisheries Institute (TAFI) on the farming of the rock lobster employing ozonolysis as a method of disinfection of the sea-water. For this grant the role of the APA-I candidate will focus on the ozonation chemistry procedures currently used at TAFI Marine Research Laboratories. Experiments will be conducted to ozonate sea-water under different conditions and new analytical methods based on ion chromatography (IC) will be developed to measure the levels of ozonation by-products (OBPs) at each condition. The instrumentation will be adapted for routine on-line analyses. The larger objective of this study is to develop a theory of ozonation in which component parts can be individually manipulated. Due to the multidimensional nature of the ozonolysis conditions, soft-modelling applications, such as the use of Artificial Neural Networks (ANN’s) will be employed to derive the optimum ozonolysis conditions producing the minimum levels of harmful OBPs. The successful candidate would be awarded a tax-free APA indexed scholarship of A$20,427 per annum for up to 3.5 years. A relocation assistance allowance may also be available to the successful candidate.

Vacant PhD Positions in Adaptive Method Coupling for the Simulation of Problems in Geotechnical Engineering, TU Graz, Austria


For a translational Brain Power project Adaptive Method coupling for the simulation of problems in geotechnical engineering, funded by the Austrian science fund two research positions (PhD students) are offered.


The objective of the 3-year project is to develop strategies for an efficient, adaptive coupling of the 3 main numerical methods namely the Finite Element Method (FEM), Boundary Element Method (BEM) and Discrete Element Method (DEM), depending on the physical phenomena encountered.

Two PhD students will be employed. One will work under the supervision of Dr. Rojek from Polish Academy of Sciences (whose expertise is the DEM) and will be concerned mainly with the DEM, the other and will be supervised by Prof. Gernot Beer, head of the Institute for Structural Analysis at Graz University of Technology and be mainly concerned with the BEM. The work location will be the Graz, Austria but since the research group is international no German language skills will be required.


The appointment will be offered initially for one year and extended for another two years after an positive evaluation of the work done in the first year. The gross stipend will be Euro 1.767,80 per month. Ample funds are available to support travel to conferences for the presentation of results. The start of the project is envisaged to be March 1, 2009.


The minimum requirements are:


  • Completed Master or Diploma in an appropriate discipline, recognised by the TU Graz
  • Experience in computer programming (preferably C++)
  • Knowledge of numerical methods (FEM, BEM, DEM)

Sidney Myer Fund: Sidney Myer Health Scholarship, Australia

Scholarship Type: Postgraduate Research,


The aim of the Sidney Myer Health Scholarship is to enhance the career development of allied and public health, medical, bio-medical science and nursing professionals, and address community and population health issues in local and regional communities across Australia over the period of three years.

A full Sydney Myer Health Scholarship Stipend is $37,500 each year for three years. The Stipend will pay for salaries and/or direct research costs. An additional $5,000 per annum will be made available to the scholar and their supervisor for research related travel.


Applicants must be: (a) full-time PhD students enrolled in an eligible Australian university or research institution; or (b) students who have applied for a full-time PhD at an Australian university or research institute. Applicants may be a recipient of a National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Scholarship. In this instance applicants would be eligible for a Top-Up Scholarship. A Top-Up Scholarship will pay the difference between the NHMRC Scholarship Stipend and the Sidney Myer Health Scholarship.

PhD Scholarship in DNA-Directed Nanofabrication, Monash University

PhD Scholarship - DNA-Directed Nanofabrication - Melbourne - Australia (Clayton (Melbourne) Australia): Our team at Monash University is developing new nanofabrication concepts in collaboration with the Molecular Foundry based at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratories.



Current micro and nanofabrication methods (e.g. silicon chip production) are based on top-down approaches using photolithographic methods. Alternatively devices can be assembled through bottom-up approaches using nanoscale building blocks of metals, semiconductors and insulators. Our group aims to develop methods that rely on molecular self-recognition to direct the assembly of nanoparticle building blocks into desired nanostructures. Short synthetic strands of DNA selectively bind to their complementary counterparts through Watson-Crick base-pairing. We will use this highly selective recognition behaviour to direct the assembly of particles to larger functional structures with unique optical, electrical and mechanical properties (plasmonics, solar cells).

RMIT University International Research Scholarships 2009 : Australia

Eligibility
RMIT University International Research Scholarships (RUIRS) will be awarded to:
new international postgraduate research students, intending to enrol in Semester 1 or Semester 2, 2009

Applicants must possess excellent academic results.

Citizenship
Applicants who are citizens of all overseas countries, except New Zealand are eligible.

Visa
Applicants who meet international student visa requirements as specified by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC), including the requirement to purchase and maintain a standard Overseas Student Health Cover policy approved by the Commonwealth Government of Health and Ageing.

Commencement
Applicants must be commencing full-time enrolment in a Higher Degree by Research (HDR) program in Australia in 2009 at RMIT University. The approved program duration is two years for a Masters by Research degree or three years for a Doctorate by Research degree.

RUIRS 2009 awardees must commence their studies in Australia in 2009 at RMIT University by 30th August 2009. The RUIRS 2009 award cannot be deferred to another year. If a candidate is unable to take up a RUIRS award, the candidate must apply again for the award in the following year.

Academic
Applicants must have received a Firm Offer or Conditional Offer of a place for entry in a Higher Degree Research (HDR) program at RMIT University, to commence in Semester 1 or Semester 2, 2009. The offers must be granted no later than 31st October 2008.

Sponsorship/Scholarship history
Applicants who are applying for or have received external funding for tuition and/or living allowance are eligible to apply. The allocation of the tuition fee and living allowance for RUIRS 2009 is at the discretion of RMIT University and will be determined by the value of external allowances. Please provide details of the sponsorship arrangement and evidence of the funding and duration. RMIT University must receive the evidence by the closing date, 31st October 2008.

English language requirements
Applicants must provide evidence of English language proficiency prior to 31st October 2008.

As a guide, RMIT University requires the following English language requirements for entry into research programs:

  • IELTS - 6.5+ (no band less than 6.0)
  • TOEFL – Paper based = 580+ (TWE4.5+)
  • TOEFL – Computer based = 237+ (TWE4.5+)
  • REW – English for Academic Purposes Advanced 2

The IELTS/TOEFL/RMIT English test result must be current or have been taken no more than 2 years before the commencement of the research program.

Note: Some programs have higher English language requirements

Non-Eligibility
The following students cannot apply for the RUIRS 2009 award:
Currently enrolled RMIT University students in a Research Masters Program or Doctoral Program.

Value of RUIRS 2009 Award

RMIT University will provide:

  • The annual tuition fees in a Higher Degree by Research (HDR) program undertaken at RMIT University, in a program included on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS) for the standard duration of the program.
  • The cost of a standard Overseas Student Health Cover policy approved by the Commonwealth Government Department of Health and Ageing and which covers the student and dependants for the period of the RUIRS 2009 award.
  • A living allowance for successful candidates of the RUIRS 2009 for the standard duration of the program. As a guide, RMIT University recipients of the RUIRS 2008 were awarded a living allowance of approximately AUD$19,000 per annum for the standard duration of the program – two years for a Masters by Research degree or three years for a Doctorate by Research degree.

The RUIRS award does not provide for travel, medical costs associated with the issue or renewal of a student visa, thesis expenses, cost of English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS), or costs associated with overseas fieldwork.

Duration of The RUIRS 2009 Award
The RUIRS 2009 award will cover the normal duration of the program from the time the student commences the HDR degree at RMIT University. The normal duration of an RUIRS is three years for Research Doctorate degrees and two years for Research Masters degrees.

The duration of an RUIRS will be reduced in the following situations:

  • During suspension of the RUIRS award.
  • If a student is transferring from another institution.

If an RUIRS awardee transfers to another institution, the funding for the RUIRS award will cease.

Undergraduate Scholarships for International Students from The Government of Western Australia

The Government of Western Australia, through the Department of Education and Training (DET), is offering a number of prestigious scholarships for international students to undertake the Western Australian Universities’ Foundation Program (WAUFP) or Tertiary Entrance Examination (TEE) program at either Canning College or Tuart College in Perth, Western Australia (WA). Applicants from all countries will be eligible for consideration.

Scholarship winners are selected on the basis of academic results and a reference from the school. Where academic results do not allow for differentiation between applicants, resumes or curriculum vitae will be considered.

Scholarships apply for Year 12 level courses; WA Universities’ Foundation Program and Tertiary Entrance Examination Program.

Year 11 students at Tuart College or Canning College may apply for an award on the basis of their Year 11 results.

The closing date for all scholarship applications will be 31 October 2008. Notifications will be issued within two weeks of the closing date.

Full Scholarships
Six (6) Full Scholarships covering the course fee of A$13,500 will be awarded with three (3) allocated by each College.

To be awarded a full scholarship requires a student to have achieved outstanding academic results. This would normally require the student to have achieved the highest possible grade in at least six (6) subjects. Students will be required to complete an International Student Application Form, an International Scholarship Application Form and pay an A$200 non-refundable fee.

The A$200 fee will be deducted from the student’s tuition fees in the event of not gaining any scholarship but enrolling at one of the Colleges.

College staff will not offer these scholarships during promotional visits.

Additional documentation required:

  1. Reference from the school principal.
  2. Actual or mock/forecast/preliminary results for major examinations equivalent to Year 11 in Western Australia.
  3. Two (2) most recent school reports.
  4. Curriculum Vitae or resume.

Partial $5,000 Scholarships
Twenty (20) scholarships to the value of A$5,000 are being offered with ten (10) allocated to each College.

This award would normally require the student to have achieved the highest possible grade in at least five (5) subjects.

These scholarships may be offered to students at anytime, including during marketing visits. Such students must pay a non-refundable deposit of A$500 within two (2) weeks of the offer or forfeit the scholarship.

Students accepting one of these scholarships will also be considered for a full scholarship and the A$500 deposit will be transferred to the refundable Bond.

There is no application fee for a partial scholarships awarded by College staff during overseas marketing visits.

Any scholarship funds not allocated during overseas marketing visits will be awarded at the same time as the full scholarships.

Any students wanting to be considered in October/November are required to pay the A$200 non-refundable fee as outlined in the conditions for applying for a full scholarship.

Notification of success or otherwise will be by 15 November 2008.

PhD Studentship in Tribological Test Engineering and Surface Analysis

Introduction and Motivation:
Journal bearings and other constructional elements - like engine lubricants - in internal combustion engines, increasingly reach their loading limit. Pure empirical improvements, as conducted in the past, are not sufficient to fulfil the demands posed on new generations of engines and their components. In order to optimize the system journal bearing (materials and lubricants) based on scientific results we extend our research team by a PhD-student in the fields of tribological test engineering and surface analysis.

Tasks job description

  • Assisting in optimizing the tribological test methods of the Chair of Mechanical Engineering
  • Conduction of tribological experiments to visualize the system properties of interest (Formation of tribological boundary layers due to components of the lubricant)
  • Performing additional damage analysis of the surface structure and the surface chemistry using light microscopy, laser confocal microscopy LEXT, SEM/EDX, Raman, AES, micro/nanoindentation,
  • Interpretation of the results also using the assistance of scientific software tools
  • Deducing tribological functional models of the processes taking place in the boundary layers

Due to the duration of the project (from 07/2008 to 12/2012) and due to the technical-scientific activities it is possible to compose a PhD-thesis at the University of Leoben.

Demands Qualification

  • Master’s degree of a technical or natural-scientific university: chemistry, physics, material science,
  • Strong interest in dealing with technical problems applying scientific methods

The School of Physics at the University of Sydney pursues a vigorous program of research including astronomy and astrophysics, space physics, biological and medical physics, photonics, quantum physics, particle physics, plasma physics, and surface and materials physics.

The School invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow or Research Fellow to join a research group on quantum plasma physics, led by Professor Don Melrose and Dr Mike Wheatland. The appointee will work on specific projects that combine quantum and fluid descriptions of magnetized plasmas.

To be appointed at the Postdoctoral Fellow level, a PhD in Theoretical Physics or a related discipline is essential, as is a demonstrated capacity to conduct independent research in theoretical or computational physics. The appointee must be familiar with numerical techniques for solving partial differential equations, and demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work well in a team environment. Experience in computational fluid mechanics and some knowledge of quantum electrodynamics will be desirable.

To be appointed at the Research Fellow level, the appointee will need to meet the above criteria and additionally possess relevant postdoctoral experience.

The position is full-time fixed term for two years, subject to the completion of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees. There is the possibility of further offers of employment for one year, subject to funding and need. Membership of a University approved superannuation scheme is a condition of employment for new appointees.

  • Remuneration package (level A): up to $60,712 - $82,389 p.a. pro rata (which includes a base salary Level A $51,302 - $69,620 p.a., leave loading and up to 17% employer’s contribution to superannuation).
  • Remuneration package (level B): up to $86,731 - $102,993 p.a. pro rata (which includes a base salary Level B $73,289 - $87,030 p.a., leave loading and up to 17% employer’s contribution to superannuation).

This position can be appointed either at Postdoctoral Fellow level or at the Research Fellow Level. A remuneration package will be negotiated with the successful candidate.

Queensland University of Technology International Scholarships

QUT offers a number of scholarships to make study in Australia more affordable for international students. An international student is anyone who is not a permanent resident or citizen of Australia or New Zealand. As scholarship places are limited, competition is strong and in most cases is decided on academic merit. Most of these scholarships are offered to students starting a new course at QUT.

The first step in being considered for any scholarship at Queensland University of Technology is to make application for admission to a course on an F or FR form International application for admission:

If you are eligible to enter your selected course, you will receive a letter of offer for admission.

Several PhD scholarships are available in a newly funded ARC project for developing and applying computational/statistical methods for detection of non-coding RNAs in eukaryote genomes. This is quite a hot topic, so you will be working at the forefront of bioinformatics with leading experts in the field in Australia and internationally.

You will be supervised by Prof Peter Adams (University of Queensland), Dr Jonathan Keith (Queensland University of Technology) and/or Dr Georg Weiller (Australian National University) and located at the university of your principal supervisor. IWC Water Leader Scholarships : Scholarship applications for 2009

IWC Water Leader Scholarships
The Water Leader Scholarships Program will offer full and partial tuition scholarships for Australian citizens, permanent residents and international applicants for the Semester 1 2008 intake of the Master of Integrated Water Management (MIWM) Program.
Value of Scholarship:
International scholarships will cover full tuition costs (equivalent to approximately AUD 36,000 in fee costs) of the three semester MIWM Program as well as Overseas Student Health Cover for the duration of the Program.

Scholarships for Australian citizens and residents will include both full-tuition and partial-tuition scholarships for the three semester Program.

IWC Water Leader Scholarships do not include travel, accommodation allowance, living stipend, field work or course material costs. It will be the responsibility of successful applicants to cover these costs.
Eligibility:
1) Those interested in applying for an IWC Water Leaders Scholarship must meet the minimum eligibility requirements outlined below.

2) Demonstrated English language proficiency

3) A minimum of two years practical experience in a related field is preferred but not required.

Australia: PhD in CFD of Biofuel Engines, the University of New South Wales

Several PhD studentship opportunities are available at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, for outstanding candidates.

Biofuels have much potential as a low greenhouse-gas replacement to fossil fuels. To realise this potential, internal combustion engines need to be optimised for biofuel operation.

Applications are sought for PhD studentships to develop advanced Large Eddy Simulation models for internal combustion engines running biofuels. Topics include:

  1. knock in ethanol and flex-fuel spark-ignition engines,
  2. autoignition of ethanol stratified-charge compression ignition engines.

Both projects involve collaboration with leading experimental groups, and working with large-scale Direct Numerical Simulation data-sets.

Candidates should possess an excellent grasp of CFD, chemistry, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, computational methods and programming. Direct experience with IC-engine CFD is highly desirable.

Scholarships cover A$20,000/annum towards fees, and provide a monthly stipent of A$2,500. Please note that these scholarships are highly competitive. Successful scholarship recipients typically have an exceptional academic record that is demonstrably within the top few percent at a good school.

Australia: Software Engineering Research Scholarship (Probabilistic Verification and Model-Based Quality Evaluation)

Probabilistic Verification and Model-Based Quality Evaluation

Research topic:
Model Based Development (MBD) has established itself as the key approach to software engineering of increasingly complex systems in automotive and aerospace domains. It has proved successful at managing complexity associated with functionality. A new approach is to use model-based techniques also for quality evaluation and predictions. Since most of quality attributes such as performance, reliability, availability, safety, and security have a probabilistic nature, probabilistic verification techniques are the best solution to perform model-based quality evaluation. The research project shall explore the possibilities of probabilistic modelling and verification techniques to reason about quality attributes early in the software development lifecycle. To get a detailed introduction into this research project please have a look at the following background literature:

Australia: Research Scholarship in Biomedical Signal Processing

Fee waiver scholarship is available from April 2008 to work on 4 Months,

CDU/NTG-funded, cross-disciplinary project on the design of high performance automatic diagnostic tools from a human factors perspective. The School of Engineering and Information Technology is undertaking the signal processing aspects of the project which involves measurement and processing of ECG and EEG signals and also human performance measurement and analysis during heat stress, sleep apnoea, and evoked potentials trials in both calm and adverse weather conditions. Experimental testing, simulation studies and theoretical modelling will also be undertaken. Three PhD students are working on the overall aspects of the project and the accepted research student will develop multivariable signal processing techniques to relate changes in biomedical signals to the performance of human diseases.

Applicants must possess strong academic record. Skills required are the ability to work across subject boundaries, core strength in signal processing and/or pattern recognition algorithms and the desire to work within a team. Good oral and written English skills are required.

Take in consideration that the visa process will take around two months. Preferred start date 1st June, 2008 and finishing date 1st October 2008.

Australian Leadership Awards Scholarships 2008-2009

The Australian Leadership Awards (ALA) Scholarships are a component of the Australian Leadership Awards, a regional program under the Australian Scholarships initiative. Australian Leadership Awards aim to develop leadership, build partnerships and linkages within the Asia-Pacific.

They are intended for those who are already leaders or have the potential to assume leadership roles that can influence social and economic policy reform and development outcomes, both in their own countries and in the Asia-Pacific region. The ALA program comprises of Scholarships and Fellowships.

Safe and Reliable Integration and Deployment Architectures for Automotive Software Systems

Research topic:
In modern automotive systems, the use of sensor networks, ECUs (Electronic Control Units) and software components presents opportunities for building innovative, cost-effective and flexible design solutions. However, the introduction of such software-controlled systems in the safety-critical areas of a car design must be carefully considered. The integration of software components and its implications, i.e. interaction, interoperation and sharing of resources, raise serious safety concerns, which include the possibility of common cause failure and unpredicted dependent failure of critical functions caused by malfunction of noncritical functions.

Further difficulties are caused by the increasing scale and complexity of automotive systems, which may contain up to one hundred sensors and
ECUs as well as hundreds of software components. Within this general research area, the proposed postgraduate research project aims to
identify and develop safe and reliable software integration and deployment architectures, where these architectures map software components/functionalities to available ECUs and govern/coordinate their interaction and interoperation.

Supervisors of the project are Prof Jun Han, Dr Lars Grunske, and Dr Antony Tang.

We are interested in a PhD student who has a very string academic record with background in one or more of the following areas:

  • component-based software engineering (in the areas of embedded systems, robotics, etc. )
  • software architectures and architecture evaluation
  • multi-objective optimisation in software engineering
  • formal methods in system design
  • software and systems engineering for safety and mission-critical systems
  • Communication skills and the ability to work in a team environment are also required.

The scholarship carries a value of AUS$28,000 p.a., with fee exemption for both Australian and international students. Additional project
support is also available for the student to carry out the research.
