Spain: PhD Scholarships in Software and Services Systems

Spain: PhD Scholarships in Software and Services Systems Network, Technical University of Madrid

Research Grant To pursue PhD Studies in the CLIP group (http://clip.dia.fi.upm.es), Technical University of Madrid (Spain), in the context of the S-Cube EU Network of Excellence

The CLIP group at the Technical University of Madrid (UPM) invites applications for a fully-funded 4-year PhD scholarship for qualified
graduate students.

Candidates should have graduated (with a Bachelor level or equivalent) in Computer science, Computer Engineering, or related fields prior to the start of their research work at UPM. Candidates close to fulfilling this requirement can also apply, and every case will be
considered separately. Please include as much relevant information as possible.

The PhD work will focus on the research areas of the Clip group and the EU-funded S-Cube network, and will be directed by Manuel Carro and Manuel Hermenegildo. The general research objective of “S-Cube: Software and Services Systems Network” is to advance in the consolidation of a unified framework for Software and Services by studying how to reliably integrate the different requirements for a service-based application (SBA), including establishing ground work to define how tools to ensure SBAs can be safely implemented. Among other topics, this includes ensuring quality of service, and performing validation and verification of SBA or parts thereof –tasks in which UPM is directly involved.

This is also an outstanding opportunity to get involved in tasks which require international collaboration, as the 15 S-Cube partners come
from 11 different countries. Besides purely research issues, a significant part of S-Cube deals with integrating existing European research in the field by, e.g., organizing workshops, striving to establish a researcher exchange network, and others. The CLIP group
itself has currently around 20 full-time members from 6 different countries. The working language of the group (and of the project) is
English, and good to excellent command of English is expected from applicants.

Experience in / knowledge of (or, at least, interest in) the following topics, despite not being mandatory, increases the chances of success:

  • Software verification.
  • Software validation.
  • (Constraint) Logic Programming.
  • Technology for and deployment of Web Services.
  • Quality of service in software services.
  • Service-oriented architectures.

Applications and information:
The project starts on March 1, 2008, and will initially run for four years. The grant will be given in the form of a full-time contract which includes academic fees, medical care, and a tax-free monthly payment which can range from 1,100 to 1,600 euros, depending on experience. Applicants will be ranked according to their value and only those in the shortlist will be contacted to ask for more details or to have a personal interview.

The deadline for applications is February 15th, 2008. Applications received after this deadline may be considered if the scholarships have not been filled at reception time. Applications and inquiries should be sent to: scube-phd-grants[ at ]clip.dia.fi.upm.es and include a curriculum vitae (very preferably in PDF), a listing of grades from previous studies, a brief description of research interests in relation to those of the CLIP group and S-Cube, and, if at all possible, letters of recommendation from faculty or management that the student has worked with previously.

More information on the research group and the S-Cube project can be found at http://www.cliplab.org

Ireland: 165 MSc/PhD Scholarships in Sciences, Engineering and Technology from IRCSET

IRCSET’s Embark Postgraduate Research Scholarship Scheme is designed for either Masters or Doctorate level researchers in the sciences, engineering or technology.

2008 Programme [First Call] NOW OPEN

The Irish Research Council for Science, Engineering & Technology invites applications for funding from intending postgraduate researchers under the Embark Postgraduate Research Scholarship Scheme (2008).

This first call in the 2008 programme will fund up to 165 Masters or Doctorate level researchers in the sciences, engineering and technology.

The scheme is open to candidates worldwide with a number of scholarships also being available to exceptional candidates from non EU member states.

A number of additional scholarships will be jointly funded by industry as part of IRCSET Enterprise Partnership Scheme (see below for details). This scheme fosters mutually beneficial collaboration
between the academic and commercial research sectors.

The Closing Date for all applications will be 5pm, Wednesday 20th February 2008.

Please link here for the news release announcing the 2008 programme.

INTENDING CANDIDATES SHOULD READ ALL OF THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION PRIOR TO SUBMITTING AN APPLICATION.

Applications will only be received via the Online Grants Applications System which is available below.

All candidates should carefully read the terms and conditions below for details on eligibility criteria.

Only candidates with academic records at higher honours level are likely to be successful in receiving funding.

Enterprise Partnership Scheme
Within this call, a number of Enterprise Partnership Scheme Awards are also being offered in conjunction with participating industry partners. The Irish Research Council for Science, Engineering and Technology gratefully acknowledges the valuable participation of these organisations.

Applicants can indicate on their application if in addition to consideration for an Embark Initiative award they also wish to be considered for an Enterprise Partnership Scheme scholarship.

Through the Enterprise Partnership Scheme scholars are co-funded by both IRCSET and an Enterprise Partner. Industry’s participation and co-funding role has enabled IRCSET to support many more young researchers in Irish research bodies.

The researcher receives the same financial support as a postgraduate scholar under the normal Embark Initiative Postgraduate Scholarship Scheme. However, they also benefit from expert industry supervision and gain experience of research in an industrial environment.

Our list of partners and projects is updated periodically. For up to date details, please click here.

Under the Postgraduate Research Scholarship Scheme, funding of €24,003 is provided for each of three years for Doctorate level research (total funding of €72,009) and one year (€24,003) for
Masters level research.

Of the €24,003 maximum per annum available to Masters and Doctorate students, €16,002 goes directly to the student with the remainder available to fund other forms of support such as fees, appropriate travel and other expenses.

  • Not having enrolled in a Bachelor of Science course of the Politecnico di Torino before the 2008/2009 academic year
  • Not being the recipient of other scholarships, Italian or foreign.

Obtaining a degree at the Politecnico di Torino
To graduate at the Politecnico di Torino, students must attain a total of 180 credits, including exams and the final dissertation. The time required to graduate is approximately 6 semesters. However, the effective duration is also dependent upon each student’s capacity. Note also that the time required for the compulsory Italian course, which will begin in early September, before classes start, is not considered in the estimated duration of the program.

Please note that scholarship recipients must attend their course for its entire length (3 years – 180 credits). Students who have already attended other university courses can ask for a credit transfer up to a maximum of 10 credits per year (30 credits in total). Please note that credits achieved in preparatory courses or in the first year/second year in systems where preuniversity education lasts 10/11 years can not be taken into account.

Scholarships
Selection criteria
Applicants will be selected based on their previous academic career and on their Curriculum Vitae.

Amount of the scholarship

  • The gross amount of the Biella Campus scholarship is 10.000 Euro per year (30.000 Euro for the complete period). The exact net sum is dependent upon the individual tax conditions of each student, which can be verified only upon the arrival of the student.
  • The amount of the scholarship will not be increased in case the student will need more time to graduate than indicated.
  • The allocation of the scholarship is dependent upon the submission, within 10 days from the arrival in Italy of the student, of the original documentation, which must correspond with the documentation attached to the online form (see the “Selection outcomes” section below).
  • Payment of the scholarship occurs periodically. The first instalment is dependent upon the possession of the relevant documentation (residence permit, Italian fiscal code, and bank account in the name of the scholarship recipient), all obtainable upon arrival in Italy; for this reason, the first instalment is not paid at the moment of arrival at the Politecnico di Torino, but in the course of the following month.

Requirements to maintain the scholarship

  • Given that it is not possible to combine the benefits received from more than one scholarship, students who are assigned another study grant while receiving the Biella Campus scholarship must promptly notify the Politecnico di Torino.
  • Payment of the scholarship will be suspended if the academic performance of the recipient does not meet a satisfactory level.
