Germany: PhD Scholarships in Biology

PhD Scholarships in Biology, Physics, or Chemistry, the International Helmholtz Research School BioSoft, Germany

The International Helmholtz Research School “Biophysics and Soft Matter” (BioSoft) offers positions for graduate students in Biology, Physics, or Chemistry (leading to a Ph.D. within 3 years) who will be employed at the Research Centre Juelich or at one of the cooperating universities in Koeln and Duesseldorf. The research school provides an intense training in Biophysics and Soft Matter, as well as soft skills. A comprehensive framework of experimental and theoretical tools that will enable Ph.D. students to gain deeper understanding into the structure, dynamics, and function of complex systems, in particular those related to living systems. (Find more information on our website: www.ihrs-biosoft.de)

The PhD project can be selected out of the following topics/methods:

  • Complex Fluids
  • Colloid and Polymer Physics
  • Dynamics of Macromolecules
  • Supramolecular and Amphiphilic Self-Assembly
  • Flow Dynamics and Microfluidics
  • Bioelectronics and Biomechanics
  • Cell Biophysics
  • Structural Biology
  • Cellular Signaling Pathways
  • Receptor-Ligand Interactions
  • Artificial and Biological Membranes
  • Single-Molecule Detection and Manipulation
  • Optical Spectroscopy and Imaging
  • Statistical Mechanics
  • Computer Simulations
  • NMR
  • AFM
  • micropipette aspiration, and many more.

The International Helmholtz Research School offers positions for graduate students (leading to a Ph.D.) for 3 years.

  • The Research School is open to highly qualified and motivated applicants from all countries.
  • Applicants should hold a Master’s or other degree comparable to a German University Diploma in biological, chemical or physical sciences, and preferentially be under 27 years of age.
  • The teaching language is English; sufficient command of the language is required for acceptance. Linguistic proficiency can be demonstrated by taking a standardised test (e.g., the TOEFL).
  • Selected applicants will be invited for an interview with faculty members.
