Master Degree in Disaster Preparedness, Mitigation and Management, Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand

The Indian Ocean tsunami of 26 December 2004 caused more than 200,000 deaths and inflicted multi-billion dollar damage to infrastructure. The death toll of the earthquake in Pakistan in 2005 is estimated at more than 70000. Asian countries are becoming increasingly vulnerable to various types of disasters including landslides, floods, droughts, forest fires, typhoons and man-made dangers. But are displayed very limited capacity in terms of knowledge of basic skills training, long-term planning, emergency preparedness and policy development to respond to such disasters.


The objective of this new academic programme is to instil the necessary capacity for interdisciplinary management and minimize the effects of disasters and people in the front line of disaster preparedness and response. At the end of the programme, graduates will have acquired a deep understanding of scientific and natural disasters. They will be able to properly assess the risks; disaster for the construction of management plans using appropriate tools and techniques, and to implement appropriate measures to reduce risks. They possess the skills necessary to manage complex emergencies and to communicate with various stakeholders and policymakers on issues related to disaster prevention, mitigation and management. Taking into account these skills and experience, the program graduates will be ready to play an important role in protecting Asia `s large populations of the whole strength of a growing tide disaster

SCHOLARSHIPS & assistantships
A limited number of fellowships and scholarships are available for successful candidates with high school and / or experience in disaster related activities.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENT
Candidates with engineering, architecture, natural and social sciences, management and backgrounds are eligible to apply for this program. Those with backgrounds in relevant fields of study or work experience will be given priority for selection. Application must be submitted before June 15 for the month of August and half of the intake air on November 15 for the month of January semester recruitment.
