Sweden: Learning for Model Design Support in Multi-Agent

PhD Studentships in Learning for Model Design Support in Multi-Agent Simulation, University of Örebro, Sweden


A new 3-years PhD position is immediately available at the MoS Modeling and Simulation Center, University of Örebro, Sweden under the supervision of Dr. Franziska Kluegl.

The major part of the PhD studies can be dedicated to research in the area of Learning for Model Design Support in Multi-Agent Simulation: Developing Multi-Agent Simulation Model is a challenging task that is often done in a suboptimal try and error procedure. Our idea is that it can be supported by learning and adaptive agents cooperating with a human modeler. There are various interesting starting points for the development and application of learning agent architectures and mechanisms from Artificial Intelligence such as reinforcement learning, classification learning or evolutionary strategies. Simulated agents shall use such techniques for discovering non-valid situations, selecting interaction partners, revising decision rules, etc. The human modeler evaluates the suggestions of the learning agents or supports them by pointing to particular problematic or interesting situations. Such an interplay between learning agents and human modeler may result in an efficient model development process and finally to a valid Multi-Agent Simulation model. Ideas can be tested in interdiscilinary simulation projects for example in the area of pedestrian simulation.


In addition to interest in the topic, a strong theoretical background and solid programming skills, applicants should have the equivalent of a Masters degree in an appropriate field (for example: Intelligent Systems and Robotics, Computer Science, Physics or Applied Mathematics). It is not necessary to be familiar with the Swedish language but proficiency in written/spoken English is mandatory.

Sweden : PhD Studentship in Chemical Engineering

PhD Studentship in Chemical Engineering on “Flow of Pulp Suspensions” , Chalmers University, Sweden.

The project aims at developing a deeper understanding of the flow behaviour of pulp fibre suspensions at concentrations above 3% by weight. At these concentrations, of outmost importance in pulp processing, the suspension shows a complex rheological behaviour. A better understanding of the system could lead to a better utilization of the turbulent energy with reduced energy costs, and /or equipment dimensions, and less fibre damage. Thus, an understanding of the flow behaviour of fibre suspensions is of great interest for the design, scale-up and operation of pulp processing equipment. In particular flow and dewatering effects in the near wall region will be studied in detail, theoretically using mathematical modelling (CFD) and experimentally using PIV, LDA and UVP.



Job description
The project is a joint venture between Metso Paper in Sundsvall, Södra Cell in Värö and Chemical Engineering at Chalmers and is funded by the Swedish National Energy Administration.


The position is limited to maximum five years and corresponds to full-time research studies during four years. In addition, teaching in the undergraduate or masters curriculi at Chalmers could be included corresponding to one year, teaching work distributed over the whole time of the position.


Qualifications
A suitable background is Master of Science in Chemical engineering, Chemical Engineering with Physics, Mechanical Engineering or Engineering Physics; specifically with interest in applied mathematics and transport phenomena.

The ”licentiat” is a Swedish degree delivered after two years of doctoral studies. To be eligible the candidate should have completed a master degree. A minimum of two scientific original publications is required for the validation of the ”Licentiat”. The ”licentiat” includes a taught module corresponding to a minimum of 18 ECTS credits and a research project.



The research project will focus on skeletal muscle and the effects of aging and exercise in healthy humans and patients.


To follow the program, the candidate must have good command of English and be able to apply this in an academic environment.


The candidate will be funded for the period of two years.

Sweden: PhD Position in Microbial Ecology

Project description:
The major aim of the PhD project is to study the effect of environmental disturbances on the composition of bacterial communities. Particular focus will be placed on the investigation of community assembly patterns and mechanisms in temporal habitats where disturbances, such as draught and other environmental changes, occur frequently. In addition, the project will address the resistance and resilience of bacterial communities and how they are related to the strength and frequency of a disturbance. Approaches will include field studies and lab- as well as field experiments. The project also requires the application of a range of molecular techniques to characterize the bacterial community composition. The results of this project will improve our knowledge about the regulating factors of microbial diversity and the responses of microbial communities to environmental change and perturbations.



The position will be placed within the Limnology programme at the Department of Ecology and Evolution at Uppsala University http://www.ebc.uu.se/limno/


Qualifications:
We are looking for a highly motivated candidate that is interested in working at the interface between general and microbial ecology. Applicants are requested to have a BSc or MSc in biology or a related field and should have a background in ecology or microbial ecology. Previous experience in the application of molecular methods will be considered an advantage, but is not required.

Two Ph.D. Studentships in Mineral Surface (Geo)Chemistry & Catalysis (4 years)

Minerals play a central role in regulating the composition of natural and contaminated waters in our environment. A fundamental understanding of the biogeochemistry of mineral surfaces is consequently essential to predict environmental processes. Our research activities are centered on resolving molecular-scale reactions at mineral surfaces and involve a variety of experimental (FTIR, TPD, XPS, electrophoresis, potentiometry) and computational (quantum chemistry, molecular dynamics, chemometrics, thermodynamics, kinetics) methods. Two Ph.D. studentships are currently available on a choice of projects involving (1) the gas-phase reactivity of mineral surfaces, (2) mineral/water interface structure and electrochemistry, (3) isotopic fractionation and coordination chemical aspects of carbon sequestration, and (4) nanoparticle/oligomer chemistry. The successful candidates will have access to excellent research facilities that are supported by competent scientific staff and will benefit from pleasant working conditions.

A new National Graduate Dental Research School has been established at four Institutions in Sweden, funded by the Swedish Research Council, with approximately 2.5 MSEK per year for five years. Dental research will be supported within the Graduate School to create a network between the four Institutions, and research from medical and other faculties. A key aim is that graduate students will gain insight into both biomedical and clinical research, which will contribute to the establishment of a translational research environment.



Within this framework 2 PhD studentships are available at the Center for Oral Biology, to investigate;
Nerve-target interactions in teeth and bone. Neural growth factors and mineralization


Project 1: Nerve growth factors and mineralization
This project will test the hypothesis that neurotrophic factors, in addition to their roles in innervation, influence mineralization during dentinogenesis and osteogenesis. If so, malfunctions associated with these factors could cause disturbances both in sensory nerve functions and in hard tissue formation


Project 2: Cellular and biomolecular interactions of osteoadherin with neurotrophic factors
Mineralizing tissue cells are reported to synthesize and secrete neurotrophic factors, and it has been hypothesized that in addition to their role in neural development, these factors may influence hard tissue formation. Candidate molecules for such an interaction include the small leucine-rich family of proteoglycans (SLRPs), which are recognized as not only having a part to play in maintaining shape and providing biomechanical strength to organs and tissues, but also exhibit direct and indirect cell signaling properties. In turn this can affect cell recruitment, proliferation, migration and differentiation. This project will investigate in detail the cellular and biomolecular interactions of nerve growth factors with the only recognized hard tissue-specific SLRP reported to date, osteoadherin (OSAD).

PhD Position in Department of Biochemistry and Organic Chemistry, Uppsala University : Sweden

Organosilicon chemistry directed towards molecular electronics

A new constellation in molecular electronics is being formed at Uppsala University; the Uppsala University UniMolecular Electronics Center (U3MEC) composed of eight different research groups and with focus on molecular electronics based on single or small assemblies of molecules. U3MEC comprises expertise in chemistry, physics and engineering, experimentalists as well as theoreticians.

One PhD student position in the group of Prof. Henrik Ottosson at the Department of Biochemistry and Organic Chemistry is available. The project involves design and synthesis of novel organosilicon, -germanium, and -tin compounds, and characterization of their spectroscopic and electrochemical properties as well as assembly into nanoelectronics platforms for investigations of electron transport properties.

A suitable candidate has a master of science in chemistry or equivalent, or expects to complete his/her degree before the end of the year. He/she has (i) a solid experience in organic and/or organometallic synthesis, (ii) documented good knowledge in physical chemistry, and desirably (iii) documented interest in computational chemistry and chemical bonding theory. Good skills in oral and written English are required, and an ability to work in a multidisciplinary and visionary environment is crucial.

The PhD student position corresponds to four years of full time studies, with courses of approximately 1 year, and 3 years of research work.

Sweden: PhD Position in Mathematical Ecology, Umea University

We are looking for a PhD student in mathematical ecology, to study evolution in response to exogenous ecosystem changes such as exploitation and climate change. A major part of the work will consist of the development and use of mathematical and computational tools.

The position is a joint appointment by the Department of Ecology and Environmental Science and the Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics, and the PhD student is expected to work with and take relevant courses at each of these departments. Depending on the direction in which the PhD student takes his or her research, the position may lead to a degree in mathematics or ecology.

For this position, strong quantitative skills and an interest in ecology and applied mathematics are required. Candidates need a university Bachelor degree, with a minimum of 120 ECTS in relevant fields such as mathematics, physics, computer science, or ecology.

A Ph.D. position is available within the IT Security Group at the Department of Computer Science at Karlstad University. The IT Security Group is focusing on privacy-enhancing technologies, network and operating system security.

Qualifications: Qualified for this position are candidates with a University degree of 240 ECTS, from which at least 60 ECTS were awarded for courses at advanced level and have a Master’s degree or the Swedish Magister or Civilingenjör Degrees in Computer Science or Computer Engineering, or equivalent. Knowledge or experience in some of the areas of IT security, wireless communication security or privacy enhancing technologies is desirable.
