Doctoral Scholarship at Victoria University: The Discourse of Negotiation in Professional Workplace Contexts


The role of effective workplace communication skills for achieving transactional objectives can be considered fundamental to workplace success for most organisations.

While important in all aspects of workplace interaction, these skills are crucial in the negotiation of complex and potentially conflictual agreements which potentially carry far-reaching consequences (Norisada 2007, Prego-Vazquez 2007, Pavlenko and Blackledge 2004, Locher 2004).

The negotiation process is a communicative endeavour with discourse as the tool by which participants achieve (or fail to achieve) their intended outcomes. A detailed analysis of discourse in social interaction can thus throw valuable light on the range of strategies which may contribute to resolving disputes and disagreements in problematic and challenging negotiations.


The research objective is to identify the discursive characteristics of effective negotiators and negotiations in potentially conflictual situations in professional workplaces. The specific workplace(s) to be the focus of the research, including industry/sector, will be negotiated with potential applicants.

New Zealand : PhD Fellowship,Massey University

PhD Fellowship in Molecular Epidemiology / Microbial Genetics and Evolution, Massey University, New Zealand


We offer a 3-year Marsden-funded PhD programme examining the molecular evolution of New Zealand’s most prominent human pathogen: Campylobacter. We are looking for someone with an interest and background in population genetics or statistics who would like to develop skills applying phylogenetics, molecular epidemiology and coalescent-based genealogical modelling to genome-scale data. You will be based at Massey University in Palmerston North and will be supervised by a team of scientists based at the Hopkirk Research Institute, the Allan Wilson Centre, ESR Ltd, and the Universities of Oxford and Lancaster.



You must be willing to spend some time working in the United Kingdom during the PhD programme.

Further details of the research programme:
The Marsden-funded project is entitled: “Cows, starlings and Campylobacter in New Zealand: unifying phylogeny, genealogy and epidemiology to gain insight into pathogen evolution”


Summary: The introduction of European wildlife has had a devastating effect on New Zealand’s flora and fauna. Yet these historical events, coupled with the importation of domestic livestock, have provided us with a unique opportunity to study the evolution of a globally important human pathogen: Campylobacter. Using analytical tools recently developed by our research team, together with detailed sequencing studies, we aim to exploit the newly-discovered host specificity of C. jejuni and C. coli strains and the well-characterised historical separation of both NZ and European host and bacterial populations, to improve our understanding of Campylobacter species evolution. We have unprecedented access to isolates, and their multilocus gene sequences, cultured from humans, domestic animals and wildlife in NZ and Europe - and will gather additional isolates and more detailed sequence data from NZ. We will discover how often, and how much, genetic material is exchanged between natural populations; how important recombination is relative to mutation for the emergence of new strains; and in which host species these events are most likely to occur. Ultimately we can learn how and why C. jejuni emerged to become such a prominent human pathogen; anticipate further evolution and restrict the emergence and spread of new strains.

PhD Research Position on Foundations of XML Databases : New Zealand

Stipend: 25,000 NZD per year (tax-free) plus fees


Additional income: The successful candidate will have the opportunity to supplement the stipend by contributing to undergraduate teaching.


Duration: available for 3 years, commencing 01 March 2009 (or earlier)


The PhD is part of a project supported by the Marsden fund council from Government funding, administered by the Royal Society of New Zealand. We invite applications from excellent domestic or international candidates who have a Master’s degree in mathematics or computer science (or equivalent), and an interest in applying methods from logic, discrete math and complexity theory to database research.

(Ownership and Immutability)

Unification of Immutability and Ownership. I am actively looking for a PhD student in programming languages (ownership types and immutability). I have full funding available to cover fees, living, and travel. The Project
Object-oriented programs at run-time consist of objects - small software components that are created, changed, and destroyed as the program runs. The uncontrolled ability of objects to change other objects is well known to result in many errors in large systems.


Immutability - an ability to prevent changes to objects - is a mechanism that could be used to provide such control. While immutability controls whether an object can be changed, it is not enough: we need to be able to also control which objects can perform the changes.


Ownership - an ability to control which objects can access a given object - is a mechanism that can be used to control which objects are allowed to perform the changes. Immutability benefits greatly from
ownership that prevents unauthorised objects from accessing and changing the object.


Immutability and ownership evolved separately: while some proposed languages attempt to support both, they treat them as independent concepts.


We propose to treat them as facets of a more general unified concept. This work aims to advance the science of programming by providing a unified treatment of immutability and ownership, simplifying both the theory and practice of object-oriented programming.


The Student
This project requires a strong mathematical logic or formal methods in Computer Science background.

PhD Scholarship in Genetic Programming for Data Mining Tasks, Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand

Genetic Programming and Evolutionary Computing research group


Background
The Genetic Programming and Evolutionary Computing research group at Victoria University of Wellington was recently awarded a large research grant in Genetic Programming (GP) for data mining tasks by the Marsden Fund of New Zealand (similar to the National Science Foundation in USA). We are looking for a good PhD student in this field. The grant will provide full funding for the student to cover the tuition fees, living allowance, and travel cost.



The Project
Data mining tasks arise in a wide variety of practical situations, ranging from classification to regression, clustering, and optimisation tasks. Since the 1990s, genetic programming (GP) has become a promising approach to building reliable data mining models quickly and automatically. GP uses ideas analogous to biological evolution to search the space of possible models to evolve a good solution for a particular task. GP has been applied to many data mining tasks and achieved some success. However, there are still limitations in program structures, representations, genetic operators, search algorithms and theoretical foundations in GP that restrict GP for difficult data mining tasks.


Applicants are invited from excellent and enthusiastic students wishing to undertake a PhD in this area. The successful applicant will extend the current research and address the methodological/theoretical issues in GP and/or a real-world engineering applications in data mining using GP and related evolutionary learning techniques.


The Student
Applications from both domestic and international students are invited. A strong background in C/C++/Java programming and a basic background in machine learning and pattern recognition are required. A good background in genetic programming, evolutionary computing, neural networks, statistics, or statistics/operations research is desired. Students should have a first class Honour or a Masters degree in computer science.

New Zealand: PhD Scholarship Software Engineering Research

New Zealand: PhD Scholarship in Stochastic and Fuzzy Modelling, Auckland University of Technology.

Auckland University of Technology PhD Scholarship Software Engineering Research Laboratory School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences.

A fully funded PhD position is available in the Software Engineering Research Lab at Auckland University of Technology and applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates.

The scholarship is tenable for up to four years to support work in the area of stochastic and fuzzy modelling in the management of software development projects.

Successful candidates will have an Honours (or more likely a Masters) degree in Computer Science or similar technical discipline. They will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the software development lifecycle and have an interest in software project management. Strong development skills, preferably in Java or C++, will be required.

Applicants with interests in the areas of Software Product and Process Improvement, Optimisation Algorithms, Requirements Engineering or Visualisation are also invited to apply.
