A new 3-years PhD position is immediately available at the MoS Modeling and Simulation Center, University of Örebro, Sweden under the supervision of Dr. Franziska Kluegl.

The major part of the PhD studies can be dedicated to research in the area of Learning for Model Design Support in Multi-Agent Simulation: Developing Multi-Agent Simulation Model is a challenging task that is often done in a suboptimal try and error procedure. Our idea is that it can be supported by learning and adaptive agents cooperating with a human modeler. There are various interesting starting points for the development and application of learning agent architectures and mechanisms from Artificial Intelligence such as reinforcement learning, classification learning or evolutionary strategies. Simulated agents shall use such techniques for discovering non-valid situations, selecting interaction partners, revising decision rules, etc. The human modeler evaluates the suggestions of the learning agents or supports them by pointing to particular problematic or interesting situations. Such an interplay between learning agents and human modeler may result in an efficient model development process and finally to a valid Multi-Agent Simulation model. Ideas can be tested in interdiscilinary simulation projects for example in the area of pedestrian simulation.

In addition to interest in the topic, a strong theoretical background and solid programming skills, applicants should have the equivalent of a Masters degree in an appropriate field (for example: Intelligent Systems and Robotics, Computer Science, Physics or Applied Mathematics). It is not necessary to be familiar with the Swedish language but proficiency in written/spoken English is mandatory.

RobotDoc (Robotics for Development of Cognition) is a multi-national doctoral training network for the interdisciplinary training on developmental cognitive robotics. The PhD students will develop advanced expertise of domain-specific cognitive robotics research skills and of complementary transferrable skills for careers in academia and industry. They will acquire hands-on experience through experiments with the open-source humanoid robot iCub, complemented by other existing robots available in the network’s laboratories.

The two PhD studentships at the University of Plymouth will be in the following topics:

(1) The emergence of symbol composition capabilities, and

(2) The grounding of abstract categories.

Project description:
Recently computer scientists’ interest in more and more complex systems has lead to an increased use of multi-agent approaches. Multi-agent analysis allows the investigation of the interaction of autonomous agents able to make decisions and to execute the necessary actions. The characterization of these agents is done with help of a number of theoretical models, among which modal (in particular epistemic) logics. This implies that the systems and their agents are described in terms of their knowledge, beliefs, goals and intentions.

The concept of trust has been recently studied at the same time in the domain of multi-agent systems as concerning interactions of economic agents. The interaction of economic agents has been traditionally studied concerning monetary profits for the involved actors. However, today it is widely believed that decisions in economic interactions are influenced by beliefs, trust and emotions.

The objective of this research project is to study situations requiring responsibility and trust with experimental economic paradigms. We will evaluate how and when responsibility will lead to trust when interactions are repeated. The resulting states will be formally characterized by using epistemological concepts of trust and responsibility.

The ideal candidate for this position should have training in either computer science or economics, with knowledge in at least one of the areas of formal logic, game theory, simulations.

The position will be co-supervised by Andreas Herzig (IRIT, Université Paul Sabatier, Toulouse) and Astrid Hopfensitz (GREMAQ, Université des Sciences Sociales, Toulouse). Both institutions are world renowned research institutions in their discipline and the candidate will have the opportunity to participate and interact with researchers from both fields. Monthly salary will be according to French standards (gross salary 1650 Euros, i.e. 1360 Euros of taxable income (with approximately 10% income tax to be subtracted)). Research language in Toulouse is English however some basic knowledge of French is an advantage.

Machine learning for uncertainty quantification of reservoir models

Uncertainty of complex natural systems is difficult to describe effectively within traditional parametric modelling approach. Many of relations in natural systems are vague and not transparent to capture and describe analytically. Machine learning provides an alternative way to detect dependencies from uncertain data and propagate them into forecasting models.

Machine learning will enable to integrate oblique data, which are not directly related to the modelling subject but still bear non-parametric relation with the modelled dependencies, into the uncertainty modelling framework. Data-driven statistical learning methods such as Support Vector Machines and Artificial Neural Networks are foreseen to be used to capture and describe dependencies in regression and classification problems, and define informative multidimensional prior models. Machine learning approach fits perfectly to tackle the task to eliciting and modelling prior information in high dimensions from multiple sources with feature selection/extraction techniques. Geomanifold modelling based on a recently emerged theory of semi-supervised learning is capable of integrating different sources of information from high dimensional input space.

The challenge of the project is to link contemporary machine learning algorithms with the state-of-the-art Bayesian framework for uncertainty quantification developed in the group. The work will involve application of advanced machine learning methods and recent achievement in multiple point geostatistics.

The candidate will join a dynamic and diverse team of post-docs and PhDs lead by Prof. Mike Christie. The research carried out by the team addresses aspects of uncertainty quantification including stochastic optimisation methods, geostatistics, machine learning, and employs high-level scientific computation (including a 84 node Linux cluster). The research is funded by a consortium of oil companies, and the skills acquired in while studying for the PhD are likely to be applicable to a wide range of areas, including the oil industry.

Desired skills:
The successful candidate must have a strong background in machine learning and numerical methods as well as advanced computational skills. Knowledge of geosciences modelling, geostatistics and petroleum engineering in particular will be beneficial.

This PhD project will form part of a wider project which aims to develop new mathematical tools and a general software dedicated to Arrays of Microsystems. Arrays of Microsystems have been developed and continue their expansion in a number of scientific and technical fields. The research of the project will focus on deriving general multi-scale multi-physical models able to cover large classes of such systems. The multi-scale mathematical methods will be rooted in recently developed techniques by our group or collaborators. Part of mathematical modeling will be done in collaboration with a Laboratory of Mathematics.

The scholarship is valued at about €1.000 net per month for three years. It will be available from 1 October 2009. Application to a room on the campus is possible for low rate. Applicants should have a good undergraduate degree and, preferably, a master’s qualification in Applied Mathematics, Computational Mathematics or Mechanics, or comparable postgraduate work experience.

The project aims at developing a deeper understanding of the flow behaviour of pulp fibre suspensions at concentrations above 3% by weight. At these concentrations, of outmost importance in pulp processing, the suspension shows a complex rheological behaviour. A better understanding of the system could lead to a better utilization of the turbulent energy with reduced energy costs, and /or equipment dimensions, and less fibre damage. Thus, an understanding of the flow behaviour of fibre suspensions is of great interest for the design, scale-up and operation of pulp processing equipment. In particular flow and dewatering effects in the near wall region will be studied in detail, theoretically using mathematical modelling (CFD) and experimentally using PIV, LDA and UVP.

Job description
The project is a joint venture between Metso Paper in Sundsvall, Södra Cell in Värö and Chemical Engineering at Chalmers and is funded by the Swedish National Energy Administration.

The position is limited to maximum five years and corresponds to full-time research studies during four years. In addition, teaching in the undergraduate or masters curriculi at Chalmers could be included corresponding to one year, teaching work distributed over the whole time of the position.

Qualifications
A suitable background is Master of Science in Chemical engineering, Chemical Engineering with Physics, Mechanical Engineering or Engineering Physics; specifically with interest in applied mathematics and transport phenomena.

General information:
To be awarded the scholarship, one must be enrolled as a PhD student. To be considered for enrolment, the candidate should have a basic training at the Masters level, and must be fluent in Danish and/or English. Enrolment in the PhD programme furthermore depends on the acceptance of the application, which must include a short project description, usually prepared in co-operation with the Department. This research proposal should contain a presentation of the intended research question, including the theory and methodology expected to be used.

In addition to the research proposal, the application must include a completed compulsory form, copies of a Master’s degree certificate or other certificates of a corresponding level, brief curriculum vitae (CV), a list of papers and publications, and one copy of a selected written work (e.g. Master’s thesis).

All parts of the application must be submitted in four copies, except the selected written work, which may be submitted in only one copy. Electronic submissions are not accepted.

A PhD scholarship runs for a period of 3 years, and includes teaching obligations equivalent of ½ year’s work (840 work hours).

The salary level and appointment is determined by the Ministry of Finance’s collective agreement with the Central Academic Organisation.

A committee of experts in the field in question will assess the applications. The assessment of the applicants will be based on the quality and relevance of the project, including an evaluation of the applicant’s ability to accomplish it. The Australian Centre for Research on Separation Science (ACROSS) is a collaborative research centre involving some 50 researchers at the University of Tasmania in Hobart and RMIT University in Melbourne. There currently exists a position to work with this exciting and dynamic research centre on a project with direct relevance to hatchery production of rock lobster seedstock for aquaculture and enhancement with emphasis on ozonation of culture water to reduce disease. ACROSS holds an ARC Linkage grant in collaboration with the Tasmanian Aquaculture and Fisheries Institute (TAFI) on the farming of the rock lobster employing ozonolysis as a method of disinfection of the sea-water. For this grant the role of the APA-I candidate will focus on the ozonation chemistry procedures currently used at TAFI Marine Research Laboratories. Experiments will be conducted to ozonate sea-water under different conditions and new analytical methods based on ion chromatography (IC) will be developed to measure the levels of ozonation by-products (OBPs) at each condition. The instrumentation will be adapted for routine on-line analyses. The larger objective of this study is to develop a theory of ozonation in which component parts can be individually manipulated. Due to the multidimensional nature of the ozonolysis conditions, soft-modelling applications, such as the use of Artificial Neural Networks (ANN’s) will be employed to derive the optimum ozonolysis conditions producing the minimum levels of harmful OBPs. The successful candidate would be awarded a tax-free APA indexed scholarship of A$20,427 per annum for up to 3.5 years. A relocation assistance allowance may also be available to the successful candidate.

This prestigious studentship in Radio Resource Management for Future Mobile Cellular Radio Networks is available now to UK, EU and overseas applicants.

Introduction:
Green Radio is one of three exciting and innovative research programmes sponsored by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (www.epsrc.ac.uk) and the Mobile Virtual Centre of Excellence in Mobile & Personal Communications (www.mobilevce.com) as part of its Core-5 research programme. Green Radio is an industry-led collaboration with the Universities of Edinburgh, Bristol, Kings College London and Swansea. Given the World wide growth in the number of mobile subscribers and the increasing contribution of information technology to the overall energy consumption of the world, there is an urgent environmental need to reduce the energy requirements of radio access networks. From an operator perspective, reduced energy consumption translates directly to lower Operating Expenditure (OPEX). These are the key drivers of the Green Radio programme. Both wide area public networks (traditionally “cellular”) and local area private networks (traditionally “wireless LAN”) will be considered, recognising that the structure of a Green Radio Network may differ from today’s radio networks.

PhD Project Definition:
Green Radio will develop new energy efficient cellular deployment architectures based on bringing BSs closer to mobile users. Increasing BS and/or relay densities increases inter-cell interference levels. Consequently inter-cell interference is a major barrier that impedes the realisation of energy efficient mobile cellular networks. Your role will be to exploit cooperation between BSs (and relays) in an LTE-advanced RAN in order to limit inter-cell as well as intra-cell interference by the appropriate use of radio resource management (RRM) techniques.

Eligibility:
You should hold a 1st class Honours degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or a closely related discipline. Preference will be given to applicants who hold a related master’s degree at distinction level. The studentship would also suit mature individuals with relevant industrial experience. Academic requirements

In order to be admitted into the Master of Science in Environmental Engineering (Petroleum Engineering) program, applicants must possess a university degree equivalent to a Bachelor of Science degree, which is approximately equivalent to three or four years after secondary school, depending on the number of secondary school years.

Obtaining a degree at the Politecnico di Torino
To graduate at the Politecnico di Torino, students must attain a total of 120 credits, including exams and the final dissertation. A plan of studies must be outlined under the guidance of the student’s academic tutor to identify, in relation to the student’s previous academic career, the courses additionally required to complete the program of studies for the Master of Science course in which the student is enrolled at the Politecnico di Torino. The time required to graduate is approximately 4 semesters. However, the effective duration is also dependent upon each student’s capacity. Note also that the time required for the compulsory Italian course, before classes start, is not considered in the estimated duration of the program.

Please note that scholarship recipients must attend their program for its entire length (2 years – 120 credits). Students who have already attended other university courses can ask for a credit transfer up to a maximum of 10 credits per year (20 credits in total). Please note that credits achieved in preparatory courses or in the first year/second year in systems where preuniversity education lasts 10/11 years can not be taken into account.

Scholarships
Selection criteria

Applicants will be selected based on their previous academic career and on their Curriculum Vitae.

Amount of the scholarship
The gross amount of the Eni Project scholarship is 10.000 Euro per year (20.000 Euro for the complete period). The exact net sum is dependent upon the individual tax conditions of each student, which can be verified only upon the arrival of the student.

The amount of the scholarship will not be increased in case the student will need more time to graduate than indicated.

The allocation of the scholarship is dependent upon the submission, within 10 days from the arrival in Italy of the student, of the original documentation, which must correspond with the documentation attached to the online form (see the “Selection outcomes” section below).

Payment of the scholarship occurs periodically. The first instalment is dependent upon the possession of the relevant documentation (residence permit, Italian fiscal code, and bank account in the name of the scholarship recipient), all obtainable upon arrival in Italy; for this reason, the first instalment is not paid at the moment of arrival at the Politecnico di Torino, but in the course of the following month.

Description
Bacterial protein secretion is a key mechanism underlying infection, pathogenesis and modulation of the host cells. In this project, novel biomarkers and drug target candidates will be developed for the diagnosis and therapy of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Chlamydiae infection. Both pathogens secrete effector proteins into their host cells, and share a high prevalence of infection and disease, limited diagnostics and unspecific therapy. This interdisciplinary project benefits from the combined efforts of 7 research groups from 4 countries, and will contribute considerably to the therapeutic efforts targeting these pathogens by developing novel diagnostic strategies and biomarkers and identifying drug target candidates.

Qualification
For our subprojects within the Pathomics framework we seek a candidate with a diploma or master degree in bioinformatics and strong interest in microbial genomics and protein-protein interactions. Experience in these research areas is advantageous but not a prerequisite.

Salary and conditions
Payment and benefits are according to the German E13/2. The position will be for three years and will be supervised by Dr. Thomas Rattei and Prof. Dmitrij Frishman (Chair of Genome Oriented Bioinformatics, Technische Universität München). Preferred start is as soon as possible.

Sensor networks for surveillance and monitoring applications

As part of our collaborative research work with SELEX Sensors & Airborne Systems Limited, we wish to recruit a research student for a PhD study on sensor networks for surveillance and monitoring applications. The main objective of the proposed research project is to explore the usage of sensor networks in improving monitoring and surveillance performances, with an emphasis on the provision of actionable user information (e.g. decision support etc.) gathered from integrated multi-modal systems. This requires, first, improving deployment strategies and associated supporting tools for the deployment of static sensor nodes in order to provide optimal coverage/context awareness from the deployed system within the monitored area. Based on decentralized sensing architecture, robust threat identification and sensor node localization algorithms will also be investigated. In addition, efficient data/information fusion from heterogeneous sensors (such as EO/IR visual, acoustic and seismic sensors) will be carried on to improve threat detection, behaviour within it’s operating context. The potential to exploit the distributed tracking capabilities of multi-modal sensor networks will also be assessed during this work. The project will be carried out in close collaboration with our industrial partner and the resulting interactions will provide an exceptionally rich research environment. In addition to simulation validation, this project entails 30% real time experiments to embed proposed algorithms on representative sensor network hardware capabilities.

Entry Requirements: For this research studentship, we are seeking a talented graduate, having (or be expected to obtain) at least an upper second class honours degree (first class honours preferred), MSc or equivalent in electrical engineering or computer science. Good mathematical background and experience of sensor signal processing, distributed/networked systems, Bayesian based inference techniques, data/information fusion and real time systems would be most desirable.

Eligibility: We are looking for a UK national student (or a European resident in the UK for at least three years). The studentship is for three years and provides payment of tuition fees at the UK/EU rate plus a £17,000 per annum (normally tax free) contribution to living expenses.

Dependent variables involve a multi-level approach that employs self-reports as well as psychophysiological responses (facial EMG, electrodermal activity, heart rate) using Biopac recording equipment. The negotiation process is a communicative endeavour with discourse as the tool by which participants achieve (or fail to achieve) their intended outcomes. A detailed analysis of discourse in social interaction can thus throw valuable light on the range of strategies which may contribute to resolving disputes and disagreements in problematic and challenging negotiations.

The research objective is to identify the discursive characteristics of effective negotiators and negotiations in potentially conflictual situations in professional workplaces. The specific workplace(s) to be the focus of the research, including industry/sector, will be negotiated with potential applicants.

Presentation and Objectives
Zaragoza Logistics Center currently provides a number of scholarships each year for students of the MIT-Zaragoza Master of Engineering in Logistics & Supply Chain Management (ZLOG) program.

In October 2007 ZLC signed with INCAE Business School a memorandum of understanding with the purpose of outlining the principles and a plan of implementation for a Dual Master’s Degree Program that has been established between the two parties. The objective of the program is to allow students to earn both a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) at the INCAE Business School in Campus Alajuela, Costa Rica, and a Master of Engineering in Logistics & Supply Chain Management (ZLOG) at the Zaragoza Logistics Center in Zaragoza, Spain.

This joint degree program will prepare students for careers that combine general management capabilities with specialized logistics and supply chain management skills. The need for professionals with a sophisticated understanding of complex management issues and the ability to design and operate global networks which are constantly in flux is clear and the unique resources available at both schools can deliver that needed understanding and knowledge.

In compliance with this wide collaboration and their joint objectives, ZLC has established and will award “ZLOG INCAE Scholarships” in order to assure financial aid for students of the Dual Degree Master’s Program with INCAE or employees from INCAE Business School in Costa Rica who whish to complete the ZLOG Program.

Coverage
ZLC will award scholarships consisting of reductions in tuition for the MIT-Zaragoza Master of Engineering in Logistics & Supply Chain Management (ZLOG) program, which currently amounts to €21,500. The reductions will depend on the applicants’ academic achievements and distinctive personal accomplishment in addition to an interest in pursing a career in Logistics/Supply Chain Management. The reductions available are as followed:
- 25 % (€5,375) ?- 50 % (€10,750) ?- 100 % (€21,500)

The scholarships will not include all other costs like administrative fees, books, health insurance and living or travel expenses to Zaragoza or Boston for the international exchange.

The School of Humanities and Social Sciences is offering 20 full MPhil/PhD studentships available to students beginning programmes in 2009/10.

The awards cover:

Direct payment of tuition fees (at either the standard UK/EU rate or International rate)
Research council equivalent maintenance allowance for accommodation and living expenses. In 2008/09 this was £12,940; the 2009/10 allowance will be announced later in the year.

The School will also be offering 15 bursaries available to students beginning programmes in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences in 2009/10. The awards are worth £21,000 over three years. Each student will receive a £7000 a year grant towards the costs of a PhD
for a maximum of three years. Fees are still payable and the recipients are expected to contribute 80 hours per year to teaching, research support or as International Ambassador.

The focus of the project, which is funded for three years by the Association for International Cancer Research (AICR), will be to define the role of DKC1 gene as a tumor suppressor in human cancer. The research plan will include experimental approaches to study how DKC1 gene functional impairment can influence ribosome biogenesis and the translation of genes involved in neoplastic transformation and progression in vitro, as well as the study of DKC1 gene mutations, epigenetic modifications and expression in primary tumors relevant for human pathology. The works involve cellular and molecular biology, protein biochemistry and molecular pathology of human primary tumors.

Postdoctoral research fellow positions in Computational Biology are available in Dr. Yan Cui’s lab at University of Tennessee Health Science Center (Memphis, Tennessee, USA). Our research interests include predictive modeling of genetic networks, phenotypic effect of genetic variations, functional elements in non-coding DNA sequences and evolutionary theory (for details see our web page at http://compbio.utmem.edu).

The successful applicants will have the opportunity to participate exciting research projects such as: (1) Sequencing the genome of a mouse strain (DBA/2) and identify all the genetic differences between DBA/2 and the C57BL/6 strain (whose genome has been sequenced), (2) Designing custom microarrays to study the differential gene expression across the BXD recombinant inbred strains (which were derived from the crossing of DBA/2 and C57BL/6), (3) Developing computational models to elucidate the causal pathways through which genetic variations influence phenotypes and predict the effects of genetic/transcriptional variations/interventions on the phenotypes (e.g. individual differences in disease susceptibility and responses to medications), (4) Computational modeling of cerebellum development in time and space, (5) Inferring the genetic pathways underlying individual differences in immune responses to a number of pathogens. The multidisciplinary research environment will provide numerous opportunities to collaborate with experimental biologists.

The successful applicants will be able to take advantage of the high performance computing facilities, a 48-cpu Linux cluster of our lab and a new petaflop supercomputer hosted at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

The project focuses on the construction of mouse embryonic stem cell lines (mESC) exhibiting longevity biomarkers, in particular cellular resistance to oxidative stress and to sources of DNA damage thought to play a role in ageing and cancer. This project aims to: 1) employ cutting edge genomic techniques to identify new genes regulating susceptibility to stress in mESC; 2) construct stress resistant mESC lines to serve as models for studying stress response mechanisms that may modulate ageing and offer protection against age-related diseases. The exact directions of the project, however, will be adapted to fit the research interests of the student.

This multidisciplinary project intends to develop synthetic tools based on carbohydrates and carbohydrate mimics (monovalent and multivalent presentations) to unravel, understand and interfere in the recognition process of the dendritic cell receptor DC-SIGN during infection and immunological processes.

In close contact with top European research institutes our laboratory will be responsible for the design and synthesis of sugar mimics capable of interacting with DC-SIGN. It will also collaborate with other network nodes in the structural analysis and in vitro binding studies to determine the mimics’ affinity.

Research Studentships in The Use of Composts and Other Recycled Materials in Green Roof Growing Media, Harper Adams University College, UK

The use of green roofs has the potential to reduce both the risk of flooding through run-off attenuation and reduce energy costs of heating and air-conditioning owing to their insulating properties. These features along with additional biodiversity and social benefits have led to a growing awareness of the benefits of green roofs. Green roof growing media need to have specific properties to help plants cope with environmental extremes encountered on roofs. Media are based on a mixture of mineral and organic substrates not all of which are recycled.

A fully recycled medium would be desirable. A three year PhD studentship involving elements of both soil science and plant physiology is available to investigate the properties of recycled green waste in mixture with mineral media as a substrate for green roofs. Successful applicants will normally be expected to hold either a First or Upper Second Class Honours degree in a physical science e.g. Soil Science, Applied Biology, Horticulture/Agriculture or a related subject.

Giessen University’s International Graduate Centre for the Study of Culture (GCSC), funded by the German federal government’s Excellence Initiative, offers a three-year structured PhD-programme in the study of culture. With its excellent research environment, a doctoral programme which is tailored to the needs of PhD students and the intensive personal support it provides, the Graduate Centre offers postgraduate students optimum conditions for their PhD-projects and a custom-made preparation for the time thereafter, both with regard to academic and non-academic careers.
From 01st October 2009, the GCSC offers up to 9 PhD scholarships.

PhD scholarships include a monthly stipend of approximately €1000 and are offered for one year with the possibility of two extensions, each of a year. Scholarships commence on October 1st, 2009.

Acceptance of a scholarship requires participation in the study programme and the wide-ranging events offered by the GCSC, as well as active involvement in at least one GCSC graduate research group. Scholarship holders must register as PhD students at Justus Liebig University. There are no tuition fees for doctoral students at JLU, except for an enrolment fee of approximately €200 per semester. Scholarship holders are expected to take up residency in or near Giessen.

This step is called schema matching. Human users perceive schema-matching methods as successful when they match database elements according to the same similarity criteria that the users would apply. Many automatic software-supported schema-matching methods have been proposed, using a range of different notions of similarity. However, existing research has paid little attention to empirical work: There is little knowledge of how human data integrators judge the similarity of database elements. A recent study has shown that a “one-size-fits-all” approach does not apply and that human notions of similarity are strongly affected by the database integration context. The proposed research is a study to systematically examine how human database integrators carry out schema matching. This knowledge will then be applied to implement improved schema matching methods.

Application Criteria:
The applicant will have a Bachelor (Hon) or Master’s degree and strong interest and background in information systems, computer science, or cognitive science with knowledge of databases or knowledge
representation. Interest (and preferably experience) in both technical and empirical research is required.
Applications must meet the regular admission criteria and will undergo the regular admissions process for the PhD program.

Funding:
The Faculty of Business Administration will provide support to all admitted students for a period of four years. The level of support will be competitive with that offered by other Canadian universities, and may
consist of a combination of grant, research assistantship, and teaching assistantship.

For a translational Brain Power project Adaptive Method coupling for the simulation of problems in geotechnical engineering, funded by the Austrian science fund two research positions (PhD students) are offered.

The objective of the 3-year project is to develop strategies for an efficient, adaptive coupling of the 3 main numerical methods namely the Finite Element Method (FEM), Boundary Element Method (BEM) and Discrete Element Method (DEM), depending on the physical phenomena encountered.

Two PhD students will be employed. One will work under the supervision of Dr. Rojek from Polish Academy of Sciences (whose expertise is the DEM) and will be concerned mainly with the DEM, the other and will be supervised by Prof. Gernot Beer, head of the Institute for Structural Analysis at Graz University of Technology and be mainly concerned with the BEM. The work location will be the Graz, Austria but since the research group is international no German language skills will be required.

The appointment will be offered initially for one year and extended for another two years after an positive evaluation of the work done in the first year. The gross stipend will be Euro 1.767,80 per month. Ample funds are available to support travel to conferences for the presentation of results. The start of the project is envisaged to be March 1, 2009.

The major aim of the PhD project is to study the effect of environmental disturbances on the composition of bacterial communities. Particular focus will be placed on the investigation of community assembly patterns and mechanisms in temporal habitats where disturbances, such as draught and other environmental changes, occur frequently. In addition, the project will address the resistance and resilience of bacterial communities and how they are related to the strength and frequency of a disturbance. Approaches will include field studies and lab- as well as field experiments. The project also requires the application of a range of molecular techniques to characterize the bacterial community composition. The results of this project will improve our knowledge about the regulating factors of microbial diversity and the responses of microbial communities to environmental change and perturbations.

The research student will be enrolled in the School of Chemical Engineering at the University of Birmingham on a three year PhD studentship starting on 1st February 2009 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The project will build on a current project concerning the development of multiscale models for powder processing. The focus of the research will be on advancing our current multiscale models to take into account the effect of electrostatics. Consequently, this will enable a numerical evaluation of how electrostatic charge may affect the flow and compaction behaviour of pharmaceutical formulations. The project has direct relevance to the pharmaceutical industry.

The successful candidate will have a strong background in scientific computing. Computer programming skills with Fortran or C is essential, and some experience in discrete element modelling or electrostatics would be an advantage.

Candidates should have a first or upper second class undergraduate degree, or an MSc, in Engineering, Mathematics or Physics. An excellent command in written and spoken English is essential. The Marsden-funded project is entitled: “Cows, starlings and Campylobacter in New Zealand: unifying phylogeny, genealogy and epidemiology to gain insight into pathogen evolution”

Summary: The introduction of European wildlife has had a devastating effect on New Zealand’s flora and fauna. Yet these historical events, coupled with the importation of domestic livestock, have provided us with a unique opportunity to study the evolution of a globally important human pathogen: Campylobacter. Using analytical tools recently developed by our research team, together with detailed sequencing studies, we aim to exploit the newly-discovered host specificity of C. jejuni and C. coli strains and the well-characterised historical separation of both NZ and European host and bacterial populations, to improve our understanding of Campylobacter species evolution. We have unprecedented access to isolates, and their multilocus gene sequences, cultured from humans, domestic animals and wildlife in NZ and Europe - and will gather additional isolates and more detailed sequence data from NZ. We will discover how often, and how much, genetic material is exchanged between natural populations; how important recombination is relative to mutation for the emergence of new strains; and in which host species these events are most likely to occur. Ultimately we can learn how and why C. jejuni emerged to become such a prominent human pathogen; anticipate further evolution and restrict the emergence and spread of new strains.

The project “Consequences of Phosphorus Reduction for the Dynamic Transfer of Organic Matter between Primary Producers and Primary Consumers” is part of the Sea and Coast Programme of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO).

In this project, we will investigate how phosphate availability regulates the productivity and composition of functional groups of phytoplankton and microphytobenthos in the western and central Wadden Sea. The implications of phosphate related species selection on the food web structure and the carrying capacity of the Wadden Sea will be addressed by defining the transfer of microalgal carbon to various development stages of selected benthic primary consumers. New views on the functioning of the lower food web are to be conceptualized in a biogeochemical model and provide essential information on the direction and magnitude of change in Wadden Sea carrying capacity as a result of management policies and global change.

PhD-student 1 (vacancy number CEME-MM-08428) will study the primary production and the group specific production by using a combination of techniques making use of variable fluorescence and stable isotope labelling of biomarkers and will also investigate the factors limiting algae growth. Primary location: NIOO-CEME, Yerseke.

PhD-student 2 (vacancy number NIOZ-08429) will investigate the production of benthic microalgae (MPB) using oxygen microsensors and will investigate the effect of MPB on sediment water exchange. These processes will be used by the PhD-student to develop a biogeochemical model describing the processes. Primary location: NIOZ, Texel.

PhD-student 3 (vacancy number NIOZ-08430) will investigate the transfer of primary organic carbon to various larval stages of marine bivalves as representatives of primary consumers. This transfer will be studied for various compositions of food (algae), and the consequences of P limitation will be evaluated in terms of growth and development rates of the larvae. Primary location: NIOZ, Texel.

Appointment:
The appointment will be initially for 1 year, which will be extended to 4 year provided that the applicant has proven to be well suited for the job. The project will start in January 2009.

PhD Projects on visualization, shape modeling and shared virtual reality in Co-Space
Function-based modeling, visualization and interaction in shared virtual environments

This topic unifies several PhD projects which will contribute towards the NRF funded project entitled “Visual and Haptic Rendering in Co-Space”. The work will be carried out at the Centre for Advance Media Technologies (CAMTech) of Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. The goal of the project is to propose an efficient interoperable mathematical model defining geometry, visual appearance and tangible physical properties of objects in Co-Space which is a new paradigm of a shared virtual world where the real and virtual objects co-exist and virtual objects can even be touched. The object definitions must be small in size and invariant to the rendering platform used in Co-Space. The particular goals of the project include development of the fast interactive definitions by implicit and explicit functions, description of complex geometry using parametric partial differential equations, introduction of function-defined physical properties to objects in Co-Space, and development of several exemplar applications illustrating the usefulness of the proposed approach, including an ability to establish physical contact with other party in Co-Space through haptic devices. The projects will also address GPU-based rendering and general purpose computation on GPU, grid-based rendering and interactive free-form shape modeling, 3D reconstruction.

Projects on AI
Cyber-learning in cyberworlds

Cyber-learning is an important and vital part of university education. However, when more and more information is provided electronically, it often results in disorientation and exhaust of the students. The students become more and more interested in personalized education where, ideally, their personal mentors would be able to help with solving any problem. Creating and using educational cyberworlds with cyber-instructors may become an excellent teaching tool implementing personal mentoring of students at affordable cost. Design and implementation of cyber-instructors requires the following research and development work to be done:

To study the existing educational cyberworlds and intelligent talking agents (chatbots)
To propose a concept of cyber-education where virtual instructors will augment and even replace real instructors. Cyber-learning with cyber-instructors must incorporate elements of fun and games.
The proposed concepts can be implemented within a shared virtual world or as a stand-alone version. The candidate has to design and implement cyber-instructors, which will be able to maintain conversation with the students as well as offer different educational services. There must be designed and developed interactive software tools with user-friendly interfaces allowing the lecturers to add content to the “brains” of the cyber-instructors.

Requirements to the candidates

Solid background in mathematics and/or physics
Advance programming skills (C, C++, Java)
Experience in computer graphics (undergraduate course at least, former projects will be an advantage)

Further advantages will be given to candidates with:

Experience in web (Java Script, Perl, etc.) and 3D web (VRML, X3D, AW RWX, SL scripts) programming.
Knowledge of Grid and/or cluster computing.
GPU programming.
Experience in volume graphics, ray tracing, etc.

Application procedure
The application process takes about 6 months to apply and complete all the paper work. Datelines for the final submission of the in-principally approved applications for international candidates: 10 October for January intake and 10 June for August intake.

To initialize the application process, email me your extended CV, graduate transcripts (in English), and a detailed essay about your knowledge of the area of research, proposed research topic and skills and experience you have with reference to it and the above listed requirements. The next step is an oral interview (~45-60 min) which is normally done by skype or phone for foreign students. The purpose of the interview is to check you language skills as well as professional knowledge and personal traits. TOEFL and GRE are normally required but sometimes can be replaced by our own tests (by skype and email). The applicants will be also required to pass a professional test (by email).

Scholarship description
The graduate projects start in January or August and last normally 4 years. This is a full time research project which has to be done in Singapore at NTU. The workload is quite high, especially during the first year. The working environment is excellent. The students will receive a monthly stipend of S$ 2,000 during the first 1.5 year, and after passing the confirmation examination, $2,500 during the subsequent years. About S$ 800-1000 will pay for meals and accommodation. Exceptional candidates can be awarded a special stipend of S$3,000. No part-time job is allowed however there can be a paid teaching job offered. During the project, the student has to take 3-6 graduate subjects up to the School’s discretion.

V. Application time and approval process

Application is open until the 15th of April, 2009. We will count on the postmark.

1. Applicants should send the application materials to the Fudan University Foreign Students Office. The Foreign Students Office will pass the application materials of qualified applicants to the relevant department;

2. After inspection and comment, the departments will return the materials to the Foreign Students Office within the allocated time.

3. The final results will be made by the Review Committee of Fudan University for International Students Scholarships. Fudan University will report the results to the Chinese Government Scholarships Council for approval.

Two Ph.D. Studentships in Mineral Surface (Geo)Chemistry & Catalysis (4 years)

Minerals play a central role in regulating the composition of natural and contaminated waters in our environment. A fundamental understanding of the biogeochemistry of mineral surfaces is consequently essential to predict environmental processes. Our research activities are centered on resolving molecular-scale reactions at mineral surfaces and involve a variety of experimental (FTIR, TPD, XPS, electrophoresis, potentiometry) and computational (quantum chemistry, molecular dynamics, chemometrics, thermodynamics, kinetics) methods. Two Ph.D. studentships are currently available on a choice of projects involving (1) the gas-phase reactivity of mineral surfaces, (2) mineral/water interface structure and electrochemistry, (3) isotopic fractionation and coordination chemical aspects of carbon sequestration, and (4) nanoparticle/oligomer chemistry. Scholarships for the Graduate Program in Economics and Finance, CEMFI, Madrid, Spain

At CEMFI we train students for careers as professional or academic economists. Our graduates acquire the quantitative tools and research skills to work as economists in business, finance, government, and academia.

The basic graduate offering at CEMFI is its highly prestigious Master in Economics and Finance. Unlike many Master programs in the US and elsewhere, ours is self-contained and offers a well respected qualification.

CEMFI grants a subset of its Master students exemptions from the tuition fee and/or scholarships for living expenses amounting up to EUR 10,000 per year. They are granted according to academic merit. In previous years, the Fundación Carolina, in cooperation with the Fundación BBVA, has endowed several scholarships for Latin American students of the Master. If new grants are endowed, they will be announced on CEMFI’s web page.

An important distinguishing feature of our Master is that it lasts for two years, the second being essential for shaping the skills of our graduates. The first year consists of basic graduate coursework and some optional subjects. The second year includes specialized courses and research training through a Master thesis. Our ratio of students to faculty is between four and five. Thus we can devote a lot of attention to each student. This is particularly important for the Master thesis, where the faculty provides guidance to a unique degree.

Members of CEMFI’s faculty publish in top journals and are research leaders in their fields. They are also editors of prestigious journals and are key players at leading learned societies such as the European
Economic Association and the Econometric Society.

Our Master students get very good jobs as economists. For example, in positions dealing with portfolio and risk management, macroeconomic forecasting, policy evaluation, or microeconomic consultancy. The Wellcome Trust Centre for the History of Medicine at UCL invites applications for entry to the Centre’s M.Phil./Ph.D. programme and for 3 years scholarships commencing in September 2009.

The Centre anticipates being able to offer two or three research studentships worth c. £ 20,000 pa plus the payment of “home” fees. In addition, the Roy Porter Memorial Ph.D. Studentship will be offered this

PhD Studentship in The Impact of Sustainable Technology On Office Building Energy Use, Using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), University of Central Lancashire, UK

Applications are invited for a full-time studentship available in the School of Built and Natural Environment in the Faculty of Science and Technology. The studentship is tenable for up to 3 years for the MPhil/PhD (subject to satisfactory progress). The studentship will cover the cost of tuition fees at UK/EU rates plus a stipend of £12,940 per annum. International applicants may apply but will be required to pay the difference between UK/EU and international fees. The successful applicant will start on 1st January 2009.

LCA is a tool for assessing sustainability by investigating the environmental impact of a product or service in quantitative way throughout its life cycle. The concept life cycle to be used in this research incorporates an expansion both temporal (from cradle to grave) and spatial compared to the product or services (ISO 14000 series). Initially, the LCA has been used extensively for short life cycle products such as packaging to assess the environmental impact of these products. However, recently its usefulness has been extended and successfully applied to long life products such as those in building materials (Erlandson, 1995; Jonsson, 1995). Existing research on LCA has been applied to assess the impact of eco building materials to the environment (Junnila & Horvard, 2003; Poulsen & Borg, 2000), however less research focus on the use of sustainable technology in buildings and its contribution for reducing energy demand and potential for cost saving in the long term. This is somewhat surprising given that the importance of sustainable technology in reducing environmental burden is undoubtedly well known.

The statistics indicates that in the EU, buildings contribute to over 40% of the total energy use (CIB, 1999). Furthermore the construction sector has been estimated to be responsible for roughly 40% of the overall environmental burden (U.S. DOE 2002, Sjöström 2000, UNEP 1999). This studentship proposal will focus on office buildings as there is some clear evidence that energy reduction attached to office buildings are already appearing. For example, in the UK, some 25% of the new office buildings acquire an environmental assessment and energy certificate (Hasegawa 2002). Similarly, many international companies have stated that the major parts of the environmental impact they generate are connected to the use of office buildings (Swiss Re 2002, Kesko 2002, and Royal & SunAlliance 2001).

Many studies have revealed that proper use of sustainable technology in office buildings such as passive design, heat loss reduction with different thermal admittance (U-Value) materials, day lighting harvesting technology and controls, energy efficient lamps in office; have a strong contribution to make in reducing energy demand, (Kim S.Y., Mistrick. R., 2001). The potential impact of BS products in the office in reducing the environmental burden and to cost saving is often substantial (Rosenblum et al. 2000; BSRIA, 1996). This studentship will use LCA to investigate the impact of Sustainable Technology on office building energy use using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA).

A new National Graduate Dental Research School has been established at four Institutions in Sweden, funded by the Swedish Research Council, with approximately 2.5 MSEK per year for five years. Dental research will be supported within the Graduate School to create a network between the four Institutions, and research from medical and other faculties. A key aim is that graduate students will gain insight into both biomedical and clinical research, which will contribute to the establishment of a translational research environment.

Within this framework 2 PhD studentships are available at the Center for Oral Biology, to investigate;
Nerve-target interactions in teeth and bone. Neural growth factors and mineralization

Project 1: Nerve growth factors and mineralization
This project will test the hypothesis that neurotrophic factors, in addition to their roles in innervation, influence mineralization during dentinogenesis and osteogenesis. If so, malfunctions associated with these factors could cause disturbances both in sensory nerve functions and in hard tissue formation

Project 2: Cellular and biomolecular interactions of osteoadherin with neurotrophic factors
Mineralizing tissue cells are reported to synthesize and secrete neurotrophic factors, and it has been hypothesized that in addition to their role in neural development, these factors may influence hard tissue formation. Candidate molecules for such an interaction include the small leucine-rich family of proteoglycans (SLRPs), which are recognized as not only having a part to play in maintaining shape and providing biomechanical strength to organs and tissues, but also exhibit direct and indirect cell signaling properties. This project will investigate in detail the cellular and biomolecular interactions of nerve growth factors with the only recognized hard tissue-specific SLRP reported to date, osteoadherin (OSAD).
